Hi Tex,
I'm curious about your thoughts on P5P B6 pyridoxol-5 phosphate to help make DAO in our bodies to help control histamine issues? I've seen some discussion on the web but didn't really see any scholarly studies to post. After taking 1 50 mg per day for many many months I've been taking 1 50 mg every other day for awhile under the theory that less is more. When I don't take it for 3 or 4 days I have increased histamine issues. When I was on the 50 mg per day regimen I rarely needed benedryl or Claritin reditabs. On the 25 mg per day regimen I use the benedryl and/or Claritin reditabs more frequently.
I was curious about your thoughts and if it is something that might help other MCers?

Hi Brandy,
Well, I'm certainly not an expert on this topic, but as you know I've been using it for almost 5 years now, for over 4 years at 35 mg/day, and more recently at half that rate (IOW, I take it every-other-day, now, as part of a product that contains the active forms of vitamins B-12, B-9, and B-6, known as Metanx).
I know virtually nothing about it's ability to enhance the production of DAO — I wasn't even aware that it had that attribute (until you mentioned it). I was only cognizant of the fact that it has been shown to be helpful for treating peripheral neuropathy and endothelial dysfunction.
Apparently it has other benefits though. I found an article (link below) that discusses its verified uses for treating metabolic issues, edema and water retention, magnesium deficiency, peripheral neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, rheumatism, cardiovascular occlusions and myocardial infarcts, learning and developmental disorders, and autism.
This article is about 15 years old, so there may be better information available by now (or under current research investigation), but it does mention how P 5-P is the coenzyme for decarboxylation. (IOW, Histidine decarboxylase is the enzyme that catalyzes the reaction that produces histamine from histidine, with the help of P 5-P). That doesn't get us to the information we need, of course, but the fact that P 5-P has been shown to be beneficial for so many diversified issues (some or which are related to the subject at hand), suggests that it may well have other benefits that are yet to be documented.

I find it interesting that P 5-P enhances magnesium retention. Since so many of us seem to be magnesium-deficient, it's pretty clear that supplemental P 5-P would benefit that issue. I have noticed that since I've cut my daily dose of P 5-P (Metanx) in half, I've had at lest one episode of severe foot/leg cramps, despite taking 400 mg of magnesium citrate every day. That never happened when I was taking the full dose of P 5-P (Metanx). If it happens again, I'll probably go back to taking the full dose again.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I am now taking P5P a) for magnesium deficiency and b) confirmation of Pyrrole
Thanks Tex, at the time I did not absorb (pun intended
) the link between P5P and magnesium.
I might draft a post that can be sticky and put all this key information and links together....
