Mutaflor works for me, but know that it is dose-dependent

Post by shend »

Hello all, this is my first post.
I’ve been having diarrhea 5-7 times a day, as well as abdominal pain, for 2.5 months.
I had a colonoscopy 4 weeks ago, and since it showed ulceration and I had blood for 2 days before, my GI doctor thought I had UC, and put me on Uceris (actually generic budesonide ER) and mesalamine.
However, the biopsies later showed evidence of lymphocytic colitis. Perhaps I have some kind of hybrid form.

The blood never came back, and the cramps, after a flare, subsided.
However, the diarrhea persisted.

After two weeks without amelioration, I started taking Mutaflor instead of a regular probiotic, based on the abundance of successful clinical studies.
It stopped the diarrhea cold after the first pill, and I had only one BM a day, much firmier.

However, even after doubling the dose to 2/day after 4 days as indicated, the diarrhea came back after 3 days.
After a few days, I decided to double the dose again, 4/day.
The diarrhea stopped again, and I got perfectly formed stools for the first time in months.

3 days later, the diarrhea came back again. I upped the dose to 5/day, and it went away again.
Now I’m taking 3 or 4 a day, but one before each meal, ready to up the dose if needed.
The maximum recommended sustained dose is 4/day, but for chronic constipation the initial recommended dose is 6/day for 3 days, so this should be safe.

All the studies I’ve seen used only 2 pills a day, but in fact I found the effect to be dose-dependent, as shown by this very well-made study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/pmc1064918
This shows the profound immuno-regulating and anti-inflammation effects of the bacteria, but most importantly, demonstrates the dose-dependent aspect.

So if you’ve tried Mutaflor before and it didn’t work, consider upping the dose until it does, and consider taking it before each meal.
