Weekend Trip

Post by Marcia K »

Hello. We just returned for a wonderful weekend trip in State College, PA (went to see Penn State football). We were able to snag a basement apartment that had a full kitchen (woo hoo) for the same price that we have paid at a B & B for a room & bath. We ate breakfast & lunch there and then ate dinner out. We ate at the same restaurant two evenings because I knew I would be able to eat there (or so I thought). So many of the eateries focus on foods that college students like and of course they are not L.C. friendly. Friday evening I had grilled sword fish & steamed broccoli. They didn't have any baked potatoes. I explained to the server that everything had to be prepared plain. He was very attentive and I was fine. Saturday evening we had a female server and I could tell right away that things wouldn't be right. She came without a tablet and wrote our order on a napkin. I ordered the same meal as Friday and as I was still awake at 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning I knew that I had been glutened. That's the latest symptom for me - insomnia. And so it goes, we can give it our best shot, but when dining out it's like playing Russian Roulette. For those who are afraid to travel, this is what I packed: almond milk & hemp protein for breakfast; banana for mid-morning snack; lunch - turkey breast, baked sweet potato & steamed broccoli (cooked ahead of time & packed in yogurt-to-go cups from the Dollar Tree); Cape Cod potato chips; organic brown rice cakes & almond butter; Nick's turkey sticks, Chex rice cereal and one banana bread Lara bar that I sneaked into the football game. I didn't eat most of the snack food that I took along. I purchased a small container of fresh blueberries & strawberries while we were downtown. I ate half on Friday & half on Saturday. I was very impressed by the McClanahan's store in downtown State College. They carried a lot of gluten free items, even things that I can't purchase at my local Giant Food Store. Had I not had so much food along, I would have been able to find food there that I could eat. I have never tried a Lara Bar before because I'm afraid to try anything new, but I was fine with it. I'm very grateful to be able to travel and live as normally as we can with my L.C. and my husband's CIDP. He did well. He stumbled a few times but it was a lot of walking and he was overly tired. Have a great week, everyone!

Marcia,

Thanks for sharing. Glad the trip went so well. I've been wondering how your husband was doing. Thanks for the update.

Happy to hear your trip went reasonably well. I like to hear what others are doing and managing MC away from home.
Thanks for sharing!
