Hi, I am new to this forum. I have developed fat intolerance and I can't seem to determine the cause. Does anyone know some of the causes and tests that can help me? Thank you.

Welcome to the forum. Most of us have a fat malabsorption problem when our MC is active. MC can lead to the inflammation of any organ in the digestive system. When the small intestine is inflamed, digestive enzyme production is compromised. When the pancreas is inflamed, the production of pancreatic digestive enzymes is compromised. When the lipase production of the pancreas is reduced, fat cannot be properly digested. And the absorption of other nutrients is compromised when the food is not completely digested.

These problems are resolved, and the production of those enzymes resumes as the inflammation is brought under controlled and MC is put into remission.

Hi Tex, Thank you for your reply to my question about fat malabsorption. Do you have tips or suggestions as to lab tests and independent labs which can evaluate blood and stool samples? Also, a nurse practitioner I know recommended I take Align probiotic. Is that a good product? Thank you, Sue

EnteroLab offers all sorts of stool tests (including a fat malabsorption test) that can be ordered direct, online, or by phone by the patient. It's not considered essential to order a fat malabsorption test because most of us have the problem when our MC is active, simply because when inflamed, the intestines can't properly absorb nutrients from our food. After we control the inflammation, and our digestive system is able to do some healing, the malabsorption problem will fade away with the other symptoms. If you're looking for food sensitivity tests, they offer the only food sensitivity tests that are actually accurate, reliable, and repeatable, for MC patients. If you're interested in discovering which foods do, and which foods don't cause you to react, most people order the A1 + C1 test panels, As those tests cover the testing of every food known to cause most MC patients to react.

I can't advise you on the probiotic, because the only probiotic I've ever used is sauerkraut (Bubbie's brand), which I used for a while when I was recovering. I never bothered to learn about the vast selection of probiotics available, because research data regarding the efficacy of those products is inconclusive at best. The manufacturers all point to test results (from studies that they financed) that show how well the product works, while impartial independent studies show that for most people, probiotics are a waste of money. The only time I consider probiotics to be possibly beneficial is after an antibiotic treatment is ended. For those of us who are especially vulnerable to C. diff Infections, taking a good probiotic for about 2 weeks after an antibiotic treatment is ended usually helps to prevent a C. diff Infection, as it allows some degree of protection against infection while a more normal microbiome can be restored.
