Cipro, RA, Enteropathic arthritis & stuff...

Hello all. I haven't had time to read the posts in any depth, but I couldn't help but notice that Polly & some others have finally discovered how wonderfully Cipro clears up MC. I used to praise the wonderous antibiotic a couple of years ago, but you all didn't seem to believe me or take me very seriously. I am happy to see that it has been helpful to others. Be careful though. A bad side effect of Cipro is that it can lead to tearing of the achilles tendon if you are on it too much - I had a partial tear of mine after tx with Cipro for a bladder infection.

Also wanted to say "hi" to Sunny. Good luck with your rheumatologist. Most Rheumy's know more about the gut than GI docs seem to. I was first diagnosed with enteropathic arthritis by my rheumy, but it now seems that I also have full fledged severe RA. They put me on Humira, which has totally cleared up my MC. I hope you don't have RA, but if you do the Arthritis Foundation website is a very good resource.

Hi Moose,

To be accurate, there never was any question about whether or not Cipro stopped the D, (we have always agreed on that). The problem is that a few days after stopping treatment, the D always returns, and one can't continue to take antibiotics indefinitely without the risk of severe adverse effects, (as you have pointed out). In fact, any tendon anywhere in the body is at risk with extended Cipro use.

Great to "see" you Moose!! Hope you'll come around more often and sure glad to hear your MC is no longer a player in your life. Sad to hear that you now have RA though. I know that is no picnic either.

Yeah Tex, the diarrhea always returned, but it was nice having a respite from it for at least a couple of weeks & sometimes it even induced a temporary remission. I always thought it iinteresting though, as Polly & you have, that an antibiotic could have such an effect on MC.

Me too Moose. I hope some researchers are looking at this. It is especially striking because so many other antibiotics give us horrendous D and obviously aggravate the MC.

Would you believe I have been on Cipro off and on for about 16 weeks?
I just stopped it because I was feeling a little discomfort in my left Achilles tendon. The discomfort stopped within 24 hours of stopping the Cipro. (I did this twice to make sure). Thanks for alerting me again to the tendon issue.
