Angy and her Jab?

Post by katinchatt »

Hi Angy,

Curious how the Flu Jab went for you? Any side effects?
I was considering one this year, as I am one of the lucky ones (not) that gets the flu every single year. I was researching what strain is expected this year and found this "funny" tid-bit;

Volume 43, Issue 7, Page 29 (1 April 2008) GAITHERSBURG, MD. — All three virus strains in the influenza vaccine for the 2008–2009 season will differ from this year's vaccine, based on a majority vote by an advisory committee to the Food and Drug Administration. WT? There I go again, assuming it's a more serious matter than it actually is.

Didn't know all it took was a majority vote to decide such a serious action. It also explains why they got it so wrong last year, they should have gone with the minority vote. I think I'll pass on that Jab after all

Really Angy, how are ya?

Hi Kat:

David and I get a Flu Jab every year. With both of our immuine systems so comprismised it has actually helped us both. Once you receive your shot it takes 2 weeks before the immunization to work but is well worth getting the jab.

Some people do get the Flu anyways but usually a more moderate form of the Flu.

If think it's up to each individual wether they "Go For It" or "Not" but in our home at has really helped.

Hi Jodi,

Seriously,
. . .this is the first year I have even considered the Jab, (and only this morning at that). I had to run to the grocery store earlier and out-of-the-blue started getting that "Oh crap, I'm getting the flu feeling". Achy, sore throat, cough & feverish feeling - BAM!
So I started searching where the flu is now, and when it's going to be Tennessee (nothing noted here yet).
FYI: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/usmap.htm

I know I don't want to suffer anymore this season than I already have. My current MC issues are causing me to feel pretty uneasy, so if I can elimate just one more worry from the list of my short term worries, I may reconsider. Last year I ended up in the hospital (on Christmas day) with bronchitis, needing breathing treatments. Like I said, every year I get the flu. My immune system must not like me very much :???: I try to avoid people as much as possible (wait, that sounds wrong) I try to avoid sick people, but that's impossible if you have a life and leave your home...........so.

I'll wait this "flu feeling" out for a day or so and reconsider the jab. After the weekend I just had, I'm lucky to simply be feeling flu-ish, as I thought I was dying on Saturday.

Have a Happy Healthy Day,
Kat

Hi Kat:

I know exactly how you feel about doing your best to stay away from people (SICKY ONES). David has COPD and I have SLE and CC so our immune systems really suck big time. So we even have to let our children know and at least remind them. If you or anyone in your family is sick PLEASE don't bring it to us. We don't say and do this to be mean we do it because we don't need anymore worries just like yourself.

You may also want to consider getting a "psnemonia shot" as well. You can't get both at the same time but if you are suseptable to bronchitis and breathing illnesses you would probably be wise to also get both shots as a procaution.

Have a Dr.'s apt at 1:40 today so will check back on you when I get home.

You won't be disappointed for being vaccinated. With our immune systems so compromised we need all the protection we can get. Many of the medications we take even compromise our immune systems even more. I'm on Entocort and even when I first started taking it I was advised to stay away or do my best to avoid contact with any sicky people LOL. Especially, children and grandchildren who forget at times that Mom and Dad DON'T need them helping us to get sick. I love my children and grandchildren dearly, but sometimes I want to chop off someone's head when they show up unexpectedly and all 3 have runny noses and coughing up YUCK. How am I supose to handle it when my 4 yr. old grand-daughter wants to snuggle, kiss and give hugs? Jeeeeeeesssssseeeee I can't tell her "Get Away"!
Anyways, I'm glad to hear that you went through with getting the Flu Jab! WAY TO GO GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :pigtail:

I hadn't been able to get the flu shot for years because I always had a sinus infection at the time of year the shots are given. Last spring I had a tube put in my right ear and it has been like a miracle.. no infections since.. so this year I got the shot. Didn't get sick and the shot didn't hurt afterwards.

As I've said before, getting the Flu Jab each year has really helped both David and I. The first year for me was when I was DX's with Lupus (SLE) in March of 1995 and I've had one every year. Infact my PP even calls us each year as soon as the vaccine comes in and has us come in a.s.a.p. We are at the top of his Flu Jab List. LOL So far no regrets from this pin cushion beauty.
I sure wish I could give you a miracle vaccine for that depression issue but Sweet Angy with having CC even after taking 125mgs per day of Zoloft I still find myself fighting with depression. As Tex and so many Charter Members on these boards have stated none of us with any IBD's are immuned from depression. I would love to be free of the "downer days" but sometimes it just becomes very overwhelming and you fight like heck just to stop the spiral from taking over your life for days at a time.
It's actually worse for me especially if I'm having a day with The BIG D. For some reason having the D just pushes me mentally, emotionally and physically into the toilet. IOW I'm not much use to myself or anyone else for the entire day.
I do try meditating or if it's a truly nasty day my husband; David will wink at me then open his arms and as he gives me a much needed hug he say "I think what we both need is quiet time" the shades get closed, the ringer on the phone is turned off and so is the television. We kick back together in our Lazy Boy chairs and just have peace for an hour or two. LOL I've truly been blessed with a loving and supportive husband who does what he can to make things better in any way he can. I wish everyone had a supportive partner such as mine.

Ahhh, flu shot season again.

Tex, I've also noticed how many people get a reaction from a killed vaccine. Perhaps it is that old immune response.....the one we are so familiar with.....where the chemical mediators the body releases in response to the introduction of a foreign protein cause pain, joint stiffness, fever, fatigue, etc.

I am one who doesn't get flu shots, even though I am a medical professional. But please don't listen to me.....get one if your doc recommends it. My hyperreactive immune system doesn't need any additional stimulus, thankyou!
I did get the actual flu 2 years ago, which set me back for about a week. I hear they will soon have a new flu vaccine for one-time only administration - it should protect against all future flus. I'll probably get that one.

Polly:

Just wanted you to know that I do understand and am aware that not everyone can handle the flu vaccine.

Just like there are many children who have had terrible reactions to immunizations which have caused them many medical issues to deal with after receiving them.

When the "Flu Jab" was posted I just posted my opinion and I did state in my earlier post that it's not always for everyone to receive. It has over the years truly helped David and I. This year I was truly concerned about getting it but talked it over with my PP because I've had such problems with my stomach and my CC. The last thing I wanted or needed was to have a reaction to getting the flu shot.

With you I can appreciate the fact that you are one of those who just can not have this immunization. I to will be looking forward and waiting to see when that one time immunization is available because it sure would make things much simpler if when only had the one time expense instead of having to do it each and every year. Thank You for the info.

Polly,

Thanks for that information. I'll bet I'll be getting that one-time flu vaccination too, if/when it becomes available. It doesn't get much better than that.

Love,
Tex
