I have taken it off and on for years. Of course, that was while I thought I was being good to myself when my tummy was acting up by eating toast and Saltines and other bland foods.

How did you figure out that Pepto Bismol was giving you problems?

I believe Gloria mentioned that she would be visiting her daughter for a week, and might not have an opportunity to log on while she was there. I'm thinking she left about mid-week, if I recall correctly.

Joan,
I'm sorry I haven't responded sooner. I'm still catching up on reading all the posts.
I began reacting to the Pepto Bismol the second day after I started taking it. I had explosive D all day and all night, which was worse than I had with the MC. I waited a week or so and tried again
, thinking that I might have had the flu when I took it. Again, I had the same reaction.
My GI's nurse was astonished when I told her. Apparently, it's pretty rare to react to it. Polly also had a problem with it. We both have double DQ1 genes, and similar intolerances, leading us to think that there may be a genetic connection.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Thanks very much.
I got my Gluten/Casein/Soy Free Grocery Shopping Guide from Cecelia's Marketplace and I'll write what it says for Pepto. It has Pepto Bismol - Caplets, Cherry Chewable Tablets, Cherry Liquid, Max Strength Liquid, Original Liquid.
The P-B Chewables Original is NOT on the list so I guess I will need to check with the mfg. I'd be happy if I weren't allergic to P-B.

Joan,
The original chewable tablets contain 262 mg of bismuth subsalicylate, plus these "inactive" ingredients:
calcium carbonate, flavor, magnesium stearate, mannitol, povidone, red 27 aluminum lake, saccharin sodium, talc.
It says that it is sugar free, but note that mannitol is a sugar alcohol, very similar to sorbitol, and saccharin sodium is also an artificial sweetner, (saccharin sodium is the form of saccharin usually used when saccharin is used as an artificial sweetner). Either the saccharin sodium, or the mannitol, (or both), may be the reason why some of us react adversely to Pepto-Bismol.
