Angy,

Naw, they raise turkeys all year long, and freeze them, to make sure there are always plenty for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

You're right, Angi. BUT, every year the US President "pardons" one turkey who will not be killed and put on anyone's table! Now, isn't that silly?

G'ma Mary,

  I wonder if anyone has ever followed through to see what eventually happens to those "pardoned" turkeys. Do they go out and start a new career? Or do they become couch potatoes? Do they have a "Presidentially-Pardoned Turkeys Club, that they all belong to, and if so, do they hold regular meetings? Do any of them drift into a life of crime, and end up on "death row" again, seeking a second pardon? There certainly seems to be a lot of unanswered questions surrounding that program, doesn't there.

Joan,

Thanks for the link. That pretty much answered my questions, but it appears that my concerns were valid - the Presidential Pardon still amounts to the kiss of death, unfortunately, due to the high level of obesity required of candidates in the program. (They are roughly twice the weight of typical wild turkey toms at maturity , and three to four times the weight of wild toms their own age). From the article at your link:
Within a couple of minutes of pardoning the turkey, a few turkey embraces, and a few autographs, the President hurried back inside the White House.

For Liberty it was the pinnacle of a career. Liberty and Freedom were whisked off to Frying Pan Park's Kidwell Farm in Herndon, Virginia—about 30 minutes west of Washington—where the pardoned turkeys live. Or die?

Off to Frying Pan Park

Those who visit Frying Pan Park will be disappointed to learn that there is not a flock of presidential "pardonees" to welcome the newcomers as they arrive in a large white van.

With the enormous weight these birds carry, they usually die before the arrival of the next Thanksgiving. Farmer Todd Brown buries the turkeys on the 98-acre property.
Sometimes it's hard to win.

Thanks,
Tex
