How long does it take to respond to mesalamine?

Post by shekoe »

I started mesalamine (2.4 gm./day) five days ago. Seen slight improvement (no sleep-interrupting potty trips). Can I expect slow, steady improvement or does response vary with each patient? I am also going gluten-free as well as :cat: trying to eliminate caffine, chocolate and wine. I am glad I found this group. You are a wealth of information and support. Thank You. Shekoe.

Hi shekoe,

I'm not much help but I know it can take several weeks for mesalamine by itself to work. That's not from personal experience but from what others have posted. I maintain on mesalamine but in the beginning I took it along with steriods in order to achieve quick control.

Since you were allergic to Entocort, I don't know what to suggest for you. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will soon be online.

Good Luck........

Hi Shekoe,

I've never taken it either, but I agree with Shirley that from what I've seen, it usually takes a while to work - hopefully it should work faster, in combination with the diet. Quite a few members here have used it, (or are using it now), but there seems to be a lot of variation in how people respond to it. More than a few have had adverse reactions to it, or derived no benefit from it, while others have had good results.

I hope you continue to improve.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
