Joan - Are You Seeing Any Improvement Yet?

Post by tex »

Just wondering, but I hope you're seeing some improvement, now that you've cut out soy.

Sorry, Tex, I missed this somehow.

Yes, I am seeing improvement on the D front. I still get some weird noises and I have no idea why, Sounds like owls or something in my stomach. (DH thought it was normal noises until I showed him a post where someone said her noises were like cats mating.)

I'm hoping to be able to expand my diet soon. Not much in the way of fruits or veggies now.

Has anyone ever gone into remission by meds alone? Just curious.

I am so thankful to have found you and this forum.

Well, we have quite a few members who use meds alone, but to be honest, I'm not sure if any of them actually achieved remission without modifying their diet at least temporarily. If you talk to most GI docs, though, diet has nothing to do with MC, so presumably, virtually all of their MC patients achieve remission by the use of meds alone, (if they achieve remission). I wish I knew what the statistics were, but most doctors don't seem to keep track of success rates, (since that's not a requirement for getting paid).

I'm glad you're doing better, and we're thankful that you found us, too.

Joan,

I am somewhat in remission and did it with Entocort. I find that I have to be careful with raw or undercooked fruit and veggies. I have also kept a food diary for almost 3 years. There are some things that cannot pass my mouth. There are others that give me a short term effect and I occasionally indulge (salads with lettuce in particular).

Good luck on your journey. This is truly a learning experience for each of us.

Thanks, Jan. So far I've been trying diet alone which I never would have know about if it weren't for Tex and this site.

Jan,

If I remember correctly from the other board you had Enterolab tests and they showed no gluten intolerance. Is that correct? Are you still taking Entocort? Would you share your diet? Thanks.

jlh i have been sticking as best i can to my diet...but only taking asacole once a day instead of twice..sometimes i miss a day....this is not sanctioned through my doc either...and i gotta tell ya i feel pretty much ok!!! i just would not feel good if i abused my diet again...cos i know ill get sick.

Diet is helping me big time...i do have flares with some foods now and again but then i omit them from my diet if they affect me...

its tough i know ...so you should try just diet and if you start to feel unwell take the meds...i know your thinking...but that may be a bad idea to miss the meds but what you gotta lose...you might actually feel better with diet alone...have you done this before? I gotta agree with tex!!!

Angy, yes, right after I joined here in mid June and read about the gluten connection, I went GF. I haven't taken any MC meds other than Welchol.

I'm hoping remission is just around the corner..........

Pat,

Yes I did have Entrolab gluten test. I can't seem to find the results since it was done in early '06. It did show I was gluten intolerant but the number was way on the low end. Based on trying things, I found I couldn't eat oats or barley (which I need to add to my list).

My last severe outbreak was in May of last year. We had been to Illinois for the oldest niece's college graduation and commissioning into the Air Force. We had my Mom with us (she was fighting lung cancer at the time and this was her big dream). We went to a farmer's market and they were selling kettle corn. Well, I do love popcorn and hadn't had much in a while. I definitely overindulged. To this day I don't know if it was the corn of the hulls but I was in bad shape with lots of large clumps of mucus. Luckily I had a good enough relationship with my Dr. that I was able to call from Kansas, tell them what was going on, and they called the prescription in. I was on Entocort for about 3 months that time. I haven't had the need for it since.

Now, that doesn't mean there aren't times that I need the immodium. If I have salad two days or more in a row then I'm in trouble.

You asked about my diet. I guess it's probably closer to the paleo diet. I do eat things that are man made (i.e. rice cakes and some bread) but mostly it's meat and well cooked veggies. When it comes to fruit I usually used canned that are in "light" syrup. If you look at most of those lables the syrup is grape juice. Luce had told me on the other board that canned peaches and pears seemed to work for a lot of folks and they do for me also. If I don't have it every day I can also tolerate applesauce.

My biggest challenge is that I need to lose weight. There is a history of diabetes in my family and my tests are showing signs of insulin resistance. The problem is getting enough to satisfy my hunger without a ton of veggies. I've been working with a dietician and we're still trying to perfect something for me. Luckily I don't have a soy problem so eat cooked soybeans as a snack. I can do without sweets so that helps but sure miss the salty, crunchy stuff.

Boy, you got me on a roll. I hope this help anyone reading it.

Somehow, that doesn't get my saliva glands running. LOL I'm impressed that you can eat them and be satisfied, though.

Gloria,

If I don't cook them too long, they have the consistency of soft peanuts. Since my weakness if the salty, crunchy stuff, this help satisfy. Of course I would prefer a bag of potatoe chips or peanuts. I do have to be careful of many nuts. I guess it's the roughage or too much fat that causes slight problems. Then again, maybe I've gotten used to eating them

Jan,

That does help for future use! I have been on Entocort for only a month now. I am so glad that you are doing so well. Check out Dee's Kitchen, seems she had a recipe for something crunchy to snack on. On that diet surely you will lose the unwanted pounds. Exercise may help too. I could stand to gain a few. We're all different!

I used to love to fix the soybeans. They really are good! They serve them in sushi bars but in the pod and really salty. Yum. Have you had them? You just squeeze them and the beans come out. No more soy for me and I have cut out most salt too.

Thanks!
