Wayne,
I sure do hear ya, about your GI visit.
You are describing the very same scenario that I go thru and have since 2002 with my GI.
Drives me nuts!!!!
I'm seriously considering looking for another one in the near future.
My last visit was in September and evidently now my GI has hired a nurse practitioner, and that's who I saw. Not my GI.. I was livid by the time I walked out of there.. She was asking me questions that my GI has never asked and what really stoked the fire was when she expressed that there is no record of me having any bloodwork done in the last 5 years!! I looked at her and said, " Gee, if I was with Dr. so & so more than 5 minutes at a visit, maybe it would have been his responsibility to order some!!!!!"
I just think it's a darn shame that some of people continue to be doctors and think of the $$$$$$$$ and not the patient at all. Nobody & I mean nobody will ever tell me anything different!
Okay, I'll get off my high horse now!!
I take calcium every day and a probiotic.
Citracal is the calcium supplement with Vitamin D for absorbancy, & DDS Plus/Non Dairy is the probiotic.
When my PCP did my blood work in November my Vitamin D was low and so was my B-12.

Another depressing visit with a doctor..................... Boy, if it weren't for needing prescriptions written.... makes one wonder why we bother.

If you look for a new one........ I wish you the best of luck.

Dee...... If I were you, I'd definitely look for a new one also.

DH found Sublingual B12 at the HF store. It is called Heaven Sent Naturals. It's got the Methyl Cobalamin. It also has folic acid, vitamin B6, biotin and vitamin C. I haven't started it, yet.

I just found this on the package www.hsnaturals.com

Wayne,
The best approach is to dissolve a sublingual tablet of methylcobalamin (1000 micrograms) under the tongue every day. That will be sufficient to maintain adequate body stores. However, if a deficiency is actually present then 2000 microgram/day for one month is recommended followed by 1000 microgram/day.
I get mine at the Vitamin Shoppe that is local, but they have a website also.
As far as the probiotic, (DDS Plus /Non Dairy, I also get that at the Vitamin Shoppe or my local HFS.
It is in the refrigeration parts of the stores, not on the shelves.

Welp, at least ya got the vit D tested. Last time I had mine tested it was so low it was off the scale.

I'm glad someone mentioned about testing for B-12 deficiency. Some of the lab report forms will list 200 as the low in the reference range, but some people (like me) actually have neurological symptoms between 200 and 400, so one should probably keep one's level at least at 400, so they should change the reference range on all those lab forms to reflect the neuro problems. That's my soap box, AND my doc's as well. Anyway, when you get your results, you might want to request they check your B-12 level soon.

I take a B-12/folate that I get from Whole Foods. It comes with the brand name, "Biochem" at the top, and then, "Superior B-12." These are sublingual lozenges. I think that Biochem is a special line of vitamins produced by a company called "Country Life." They are one of two vitamin companies that I seem to do well on. They were successful in getting my B-12 blood level up into the middle of the normal range, well above 400. I can now get away with just taking a 3000 mcg B-12 every now and that keeps my level up.
My gut was pretty damaged at the time I started the gf diet, and I understand that healing isn't 100 percent in an older person as with a person diagnosed in youth who sticks to the diet. Still, other than the expense, how easy is it taking a few vitamins on a regular basis, compared to what many of us have been through -- piece of gf cake! Ha!

Malabsorption is a major issue with folks like us, so we loose lots of important nutrients depending upon where the damage to our gut is. They are absorbed in different places, but that's for another day.

Best wishes to you.

Wayne,

The most likely reason why your doctor thinks that Activa is an exception to your diet, is probably because he thinks that you are avoiding lactose, (a sugar), rather than the protein casein. IOW, he doesn't understand intolerances/allergies. Activa, of course, does contain casein, but virtually no lactose.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
