Thanks for asking, Dee.
Yep, I'm maintaining on 1 pill a day and Norman is a steady visitor once again. I'm considering dropping down to 1 pill every other day after the holidays. If I can maintain on that dosage, I'm going to stay with it for a while to let my gut heal more completely.
It doesn't take much for Norman to go away, though. Yesterday I was in Chicago with DD1 and had to eat dinner out. I ordered a hamburger w/o a bun, but they put it on a bun anyway (which I removed).
Norman took the afternoon off today. <Sigh> Remission is very fragile for me - I can't make any mistakes. I even ordered a baked potato and ate it dry. Heck, I should have slathered it with the sour cream and butter.
I'll be going to visit DD2 in Utah from Dec. 17-26. I've made hamburger buns, cookies, bread and ghee in preparation. I've also melted some SF chocolate chips into molds. That covers all the essentials.
We're staying in a hotel the first two nights and I'm trying to plan my meals. I'm hoping we can use local transit to get to the nearest Whole Foods. Taking any trip away from home requires advance meal planning as you all know. I don't want to repeat the major setback that I had after my last visit in October.

Glad you are doing better, Gloria.
I use a little olive oil on my baked potato at home and in restaurants.
Have fun on your trip. You sound very prepared. I am jealous of your chocolate. I still can't even eat the Enjoy Life chocolate, yet.

Hi Gloria,
Sorry to hear about your dining out experience. If it would have been me, it would have gone back and made right by requesting no bun. How hard is that to figure out for these restaurant employees???
You sound very prepared for your trip..
I'll be going to Florida for 10 days the 1st of January, but I'm just going to buy what I need down there since my sister is close to a great HFS and a Whole Foods.
I didn't want to ship a box down, like I usually do so that everything is there when I get there.
Have a great time in Utah..

Joan,
I'll have to remember the olive oil suggestion. I'm jealous of your eggs. I can't say I'd give up chocolate if I could eat eggs, because I don't have that choice, but eliminating eggs affects all baked goods, breakfasts, and most desserts. There's only 1 recipe in a GF bread-baking book I purchased that doesn't require eggs. It was about a year before I was able to successfully bake bread from scratch without using them.
Dee,
We went to a drive-up window for the food and were in a hurry to get home. Otherwise I probably would have protested. I had packed a lunch and didn't expect we'd also be eating dinner out. We stayed at the museum too long, but the grands loved it.
The hotel stay is a little test to see if I can manage to eat away from home and family residences. The hotel has a microwave and a refrigerator, which will help. I think I'm going to make some waffles and donuts, too. Breakfast is my hardest meal because I can't eat eggs. It's too bad that I can't put liquids in my carry-on food suitcase. I wouldn't have to shop at Whole Foods if I could bring rice milk. I might call my GI and see if he'll write me a note. Since I'm the one who diagnosed my intolerances, he might balk. I'll let you know.

Gloria,
I don't know how close you will be to stores on your trip, but I've been able to find rice milk in most Walmart's and my regular grocery stores close by. I live in a small town (less than 7,000 folks) and my local store carries it.
Have fun on your trip.

Jan,
Thank you for the suggestion. We'll be staying in the heart of Salt Lake City, right next to the Family History Library (we're going to do genealogy research) and I don't think there are any grocery stores in the area. They do have a great transportation system, however. I think we can easily get to the Whole Foods store if we walk about 4 blocks from the transit stop. It might be better for me to bring my own donuts and waffles to eat for those two mornings.

Gloria,
I would sure love to hear about your trip when you get back. I have just gotten interested in geneology. I have a cousin who has done as far back on my Dad's side as she could. Another cousin did my mother's father side back to Scotland. I'm trying to work on my mother's mother but have hit a roadblock. I may just have to plan a trip to SLC.

Jan,
Genealogy is a fascinating hobby, isn't it? Research methodology has changed a great deal in the 33 years that I've been doing it. The Internet has made it so much easier. I belong to a few genealogical societies and have attended several conferences. I'm also the webmaster for our local genealogy society. I learn a lot by attending meetings and conferences and by reading genealogy periodicals. Nonetheless, we all hit that road block at some point in our research.
I'm fortunate to be able to go to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City several times a year because DD2 lives about 1/2 hour away from Salt Lake City. It helps that DH does research, too. But it's difficult to tear ourselves away from DD2 and our granddaughters to do research. We'll be there 9 days this trip so we decided to start our visit at the library.
Nearly all of the microfilms at the FHL can be ordered for a small fee from a local Family History Center. You may already know that. But the FHL also has a massive ongoing project to digitize and index all of the microfilmed records (within copyright laws) and place them on their website: http://www.familysearch.org. You can see the records which have been imaged by clicking on the Search Records tab, then Record Search Pilot. It will take years to digitize the millions of rolls of microfilm, and the indexing of the records will take even longer. They are always looking for volunteers to help with the indexing and you don't have to be a member of the church to do it.

Gloria,
Thanks so much for the web site http://www.familysearch.org. I have been using it and found several of my relatives listed there. I like the fact that it is free. Most of the other sites I have been to want to charge a fee for their info. (can't blame them I guess)
My great grandfather served in the Civil War. Do you know of any good sites that would have information for me? Thanks.
