If you're referring to the penquins displayed under many members' usernames, those are known as "rank" indicators, and they provide a simple, visual indication of the number of posts written by members. As the number of your posts surpasses certain preset thresholds, the penguins will show up under your username, and as certain posting levels are exceeded, the type of penguin will change. The gold stars that you see under some members' posting status are an indication of the number of years of membership. IOW, on each annual anniversary of registration, an additional gold star is added. All that is done automatically by the system, of course, but the setup for the output can be changed by admins or moderators, if desired.
IOW, these are just some of the 'bells and whistles" on the board, which hopefully add to the enjoyment of using it. In case you, (or anyone else), is not aware of it, you can access dozens of smileys to add to your posts, by clicking on the "View more Emoticons" link to the left of the message-composing window, and then enlarging the pop-up window, so that it is easier to locate the one, (or ones), that you want to select. To add a smiley to your post, when you get to a place where you want to add one, simply locate the one you want, and click on it, and it will be added automatically to your post. You can also move them around in your post, or duplicate them, by cutting, or copying them, and then pasting them where you want them. Just be sure to always leave a space ahead of the first colon in the smiley code, so that it will display properly in everyone's browser.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
