Hi, Last night my oldest dog Buck went on alert as I let him out. So I went out with him and left the outside lights off. I saw a cat crossing my drive way headed for the farm truck parked near a tree. It was most deffinetly bigger than a house cat. In fact alot bigger. Couldn't get a good Idea of color, but it had a tail and it was real long. Which tells me it wasn't a linx. By the time I went in and got the gun, it had already taken cover. Mike went out to see if he could see it but it was gone. I just know it was not a house or ferrel cat. Guess I better keep a close eye on the little dogs at night when they go out huh? I am checking into a Government trapper that is in this area.

Hi Oma,

It certainly could have been a cougar. They're often pretty bold, these days, and some of them have no fear of humans, especially if they have just made a kill, or if they see a dog behind you that looks like lunch to them. You might be able to find some tracks tomorrow. Be careful, though. Shirley's right.

A government trapper might know if one is working the area, but just because he says he hasn't heard of any, doesn't mean that you didn't see one. That's big country out there.

Love,
Tex

Sometimes it is like living on the frontier. I have tried to find a Website that had pictures of the cats in Texas to no avail. All I could find was Very Big Cats. Have not seen the cat I saw yet. Mike is watching for the cat tho.

Oma,

Here is a PDF file that shows pictures of, and describes, all of the wild cats of Texas. It takes a few minutes to download on a dialup connection, but it's a good reference. You can save a copy to your computer, (so that you don't have to wait for it to download the next time you want to study it), by clicking on the icon at the upper left of the page, (where it says "Save a copy"), or you can print it out, if you wish. It's four pages long.

Do be careful...we have had one of those " big kitties" move into our area. I was out one day at dawn doing chores when it screamed. Every cow, horse and chicken on the place froze in their tracks at that sound....Never good when you become part of the food chain. My family teases me about doing my chores well before sundown now, because of my limp, I don't want to be out during their hunting time and be mistaken for a " Blue Plate Special" Times like this, I'm very thankful that my service dog is a 100 lb Catahoula, it's in her DNA to protect against predators, be they two legged, or four legged...

Hugs,
Carrie

Jill,

You're most welcome. It's interesting how some of us can see alternate benefits in information sources, that the rest of us would never see. Good for you.

Carrie,

I agree with Shirley - an ideal choice.

You know, I envy you, in a strange sort of way , (though I'm sorry that you have to constantly be on your toes, because of that cat's presence). I've been around those cats many, many times during my life, and I've heard them make all sorts of vocalizations, but I've never heard one actually scream, (except in videos, movies, tv, etc.). That has to be one of the most hair-raising sounds in nature - probably about the most primal sensation that we are ever likely to experience, these days.

Hugs,
Tex

Shirley, Thanks...she is my girl, I could never keep this place going without her...

Wayne..

I will admit...the horses and cows weren't the only ones frozen in their tracks. I had never heard one scream in the wild either (only in movies and at the wildlife sanctuary ), and have spent a lot of time out in these Oklahoma woods. That sound just made the hair on the back of my neck stand straight up...I wonder if it is a young male that is interacting with the cougar that has taken up residence about 2 miles away, where my sister lives. Her's has been established there for quite some time...but ours just showed up recently, makes me wonder if there is some real estate issues between them...I do find it interesting that the tons of coyotes that are normally in this area have all moved out since the big kitty showed up...and the deer stay in a constant state of panic now...they don't like being on the menu either....

The interesting reaction was from Boo, my Catahoula. She reacted to me and the stock by going into overdrive, spent the next two hours with her hackles up, just begging for a fight....the frozen in your tracks gene is not in her DNA...nice to know my girl has my back...

Hugs,
C
