Soy Issues

Post by Courtney »

So I thought it was tough when I had to find cosmetics, soaps, etc, that didn't contain gluten. :mallet: That wasn't hard at all! Is there anything on earth that doesn't have soy in it? Seriously. Those of you who are soy intolerant, what do you do? Do you worry about soaps, lotions, shampoos? What brands do you use for things like that? And is there a cosmetic company on earth that isn't convinced soy is the greatest thing since sliced bread (ha, which isn't so great, either!)? Will I ever wear lipstick again?!

Courtney,

Hopefully, you will get some responses with suggestions for proven products that you can safely use. I suspect that ingredients may need to be carefully considered, when choosing lipstick. For most other skin care products, though, this may not be a problem, (except in the situation where skin is licked, and your partner's choice of products would probably be much more important than yours, in that situation).

Gluten in skin care products, for example, is typically not a problem, unless dermatitis herpetiformis is present. With DH, you definitely have to avoid contact with gluten, but with only digestive system manifestations of gluten-sensitive enteropathy, skin exposure is usually not an issue, or at least, I've never heard of a case where it was. Of course, I'm just making a WAEG when I extend this "theory" to soy in skin care products, but so far, at least, I've seen no reason to change that opinion.

It definitely is when you've got MC.

Courtney,

I am finding this out for myself. I was eating a GF breakfast bar in the am for added calories, only to find out this weekend that it contains soy. I just use regular shampoos, soaps and lotions. I am not a make-up person (tom-boy at heart) and really have not worn the stuff since I stopped working when my son was born 11 years ago. I do wear chap-stick though.

What about toothpaste. Is there any gluten or soy in that? I can't find any ingredients besides active ones in my Crest.

I don't worry about soaps, shampoos, conditioners lotions.
If you're not going to ingest it, those type of things shouldn't be a problem.
I use Blistex and you know, I haven't even checked that for soy??
"Bare Minerals" mineral foundation is safe. Should be okay if you don't get it in your mouth.
Haven't found soy in the toothpaste, but there is corn.
I'll check out the Tom's of Maine toothpaste and other products to see what's in them to report back. I know some here just use baking soda to brush with.
Burt's Bees lip glosses are okay.
Like Tex stated though, if you suffer from DH that's another problem to deal with on the skin.

I have to watch for soy in lotions and body butters because I used to get a rash when I used them, even before I had MC. I didn't notice a connection between the body rash and the D, however.

I don't pay any attention to any of my other intolerances in any other products I don't ingest. For example, I believe I'm intolerant to oats, but I seem to be able to use oatmeal lotions and body products.

I think that much of this depends on how sensitive we are to the food and also whether we are allergic or intolerant to it.

Morning Courtney,

I am right there with you on this one. The lipstick I normally use since being GF, SF and other Fs (LOL) is contained in the following link.

http://www.vashonorganics.com/SPD/hemp- ... 366431.jsp

I have found it to be safe and I do avoid most products for skin, hair, etc. that contain any of my intolerances. I use bare minerals makeup exclusively but not their lipstick.

Love, Maggie

Thanks for your responses. All very helpful. I had not thought about soy in the toothpaste, but I will check that. I think it makes sense, if you don't have DH or another skin reaction, to use "normal" products as long as they are not things that would get into your mouth. That's what I'll do, for now anyway, considering how difficult it is to find SF products. Makeup and toothpaste seem to be the big ones. Thanks for that link, Maggie. Here's another one:

http://www.christinemariecosmetics.com/

I emailed that company yesterday, and they said that their products are all GF, dairy free, and SF. I am going to check on ChapStick brand products, because I use that all the time.

Slightly less frustratedly yours,

Courtney,

I just received in the mail today the book "Gluten/Casein/Soy Free Grocery Shopping Guide" 2009 edition and under Lip Care, Blistex, Burt's Bee (lip balm in tin and all shades of Lipshimmer and medicated lip balm) and Chapstick are all GF,LF & SF.

Under toothpaste, Aquafresh (Cavity Protection); Colgate (Cavity Protection - regular flavor); Total (Advanced Whitening, Clean Mint & Mint Stripe Gel); Crest (Cavity Protection regular), Extra Whitening, Whitening Expressions in extreme herbal mint & vanilla mint and Whitening Plus Scope (that's the one I use so I am good) and Tom's of Maine (Natural Anticavity Fluoride Toothpaste in spearmint & Wintermint).

Hope that helps.

Rose,
Right after I wrote my post, I brushed my teeth and realized that I have at least one mouth sore every day. As soon as one goes away, I get another. This in spite of being on 1 pill of Entocort and not having any D right now.

I'm wondering if it's my toothpaste. I use Aquafresh Advanced. Is that listed in the book?

Gloria,

Aquafresh is on the list, but only the Cavity Protection one. So your advanced white may be causing your mouth sores. I glad that you mentioned the mouth sores because I get them as well from time to time and could not figure out where or why they come from.

Everybody else, the book is fantastic. It has all kinds of product brands in there that you can get at the grocery store or the health food store. I didn't realize there was so much out there. I am really happy I purchased it. I got mine through Amazon.

Love,

Thank you for looking for me, Rose. I'll have to look for the Cavity Protection Aquafresh. It would be nice if switching made the mouth sores stay away. I'm pretty sure that mouth sores are a reaction to an intolerance.
