I saw something on the news about terrible fires in Australia. I sure hope you or any of your loved ones aren't near them.

Hello Joan,
The fires are in Victoria, a southern state where they have had temperatures up to 48 degrees C. Not sure what that is in farenheit but it is very, very hot and winds up to 100km an hour. Some of the fires ( about 30 of them) have been deliberately lit. 700 homes have been destroyed. It is heat breaking. We are fine here where we are.
In contrast, in Queensland 60% of the state is under water. Many towns in the north are flooded with homes under metres of water. Just goes to show the contrasts in this country.

Liz,
Wow! That is quite a contrast. We've had a somewhat similar situation over here, as far as the rain is concerned, with the Pacific NW getting lots of rain and snow, while it continues to be dry as a bone, where I live.
Two years ago, we were having floods here, but when the rain stopped, it stopped almost completely.
48 degrees C is downright warm - that's 118 degrees F.
Love,
Wayne

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
We are fine,
Canberra is about 600 km (370 miles) north of the big fires in Victoria. We can smell the smoke from the fires near Bega (south coast NSW), but they are smaller and less likely to impact on homes.
We have a friend with a peony flower farm in Creswick , Vic, which is barely a half hour drive from Kilmore where people have been killed, but thankfully the wind is blowing away from her town. I have another colleague who is a bushfire fighter and he hasn't come to work today, so we expect he has gone to Beechworth with a crew that went down yesterday. 108 lives lost so far and they guess over 750 homes, at least another eighty in hospital with serious burns (some of those won't make it). The numbers will go up when they can get into some of these areas. Many tragic stories.
We went through Kilmore at christmas, and it is (was) a lovely area - pretty, small rural holdings, lots of tiny towns. Relatively populated for a rural area.
The fires will take days to go out, as the weather isn't helping. Victoria has been getting up to 48C (118F) for the last week. Whereas we have been grumbling at our 41C (106F). At least we got a cool change last night, for the Fire areas that just seemed to bring a change of wind direction and no relief.
And then in north Queensland you have the floods, with one confirmed loss of life, and another 4 missing , presumed drowned. While you in the northern hemisphere are all snowed in. Funny old world.

The weather all over the world seems to have gone ballistic. Our son-in law is at the Royal Melbourne hospital. He left Christchurch a couple of weeks ago to go into the dreadful heat down there. He is really feeling it. At least it is cool in the hospital where he is working 60 hours per week. They have been extremely busy & I expect will get even busier with injured people maybe being ferried to Melbourne for treatment.
It is feared that a little 5 year old boy has been taken by a crocodile in the flooded water up north.
