A Weird Question about D Timing....

Post by Courtney »

Hi all,

Do any of you notice that when you change a daily habit, your D patterns change? I ask because, whenever I have to get up exceptionally early, as I did this morning (about 5:45--I usually get up around 7:00), I don't have the usual morning D. It's very weird, because I sometimes wake up with D at night, and I always have a few bouts first thing in the morning, but when I actually get up very early, I don't have D. Now, often it wakes me up when I don't have to wake up that early, which I can only attribute to the ornery nature of MC  .

It would be great to skip the D issues in the morning, except that I just feel nauseaus and bloated all day, with D constantly threatening. Case in point, I had major issues this afternoon at the HFS and had to leave my cart to run to the bathroom. Then, the same situation as I pulled into the driveway. I still feel sick. This happens every time I get up before around 6:15, and I can't figure it out. Has anyone else experienced this or something similar?

Courtney,

I always have D in the am (I get up around 3:00 am to work out and run before the d really kids in). Usually I have more bathroom breaks between 5:30 and 7:00. I am always nauseated in the morning regardless of whether it is a "bad" d morning or a not. I am usually good during the day and then about 5:30 in the evening the conference calls start coming in (we call d "conference calls" at our house and the bathroom my "office"). Like you, I get it at night (sometimes I wake up and sometimes I don't).

Courtney:

There are NO weird questions on these boards. There is NOTHING you can say or ask that will make any of us flinch or feel are unneccessary.

Your questions and concerns are very important. Some of us can only give support yet others have advice backed up on medical research they have done.

Thanks for all your thoughts. I know many of us seem to have morning and nighttime issues. For me, it's usually worst first thing in the morning and right before bed at night. I guess I just find it strange that when I "force" myself to get up before a particular time, I don't have D in the morning.

I do wonder why it's so bad for most of us at night and in the morning. Any ideas? Another piece of the puzzle?

Rose, I admire your commitment to getting up that early to exercise! Wow!

Hi Courtney,

I've been thinking about this, and trying to remember how my own experiences related to this, but CRS seems to be a major obstacle. To be honest, I probably didn't pay close enough attention, because I don't remember noticing any effect such as that. That doesn't mean that I didn't experience it, it simply means that I don't recall noticing it.

I had alternating D and C, and that changes the situation, also. I can remember that on the days when I didn't have D, I would always try to "force" a BM, and usually that would be unsuccessful, on most of those days, especially for a few days immediately following several days of "world-class" D), but yes, after a day or so of that, nausea would become a problem, and sometimes it became serious enough to result in vomiting, because the body tends to perceive C as an obstruction, and this was also often accompanied by gastroparesis, in my case, which made the obstruction issue sort of acute, when the stomach shut down.

You know, Rose's comments about getting up early reminded me that I used to get up early too, (around 4, not 3) - not to exercise, but to work in my office, because that time of the day, the phone doesn't ring, and no one knocks on the door, so I could get a lot of paperwork done. That all faded away with the advent of my symptoms, though, because I always felt exhausted, and short of sleep, and the first urgent reminder that I had to get to the bathroom - Right Now!, took over as my signal to get up each morning. With rare exceptions, it occurred between 6 and 6:30 am, almost every morning. I don't believe that was influenced by the time I went to bed, because my sleep patterns were usually very erratic, due to all the pain from gas/bloating, cramps, and body aches and pains, etc.

Whenever I was in the D phase, I would usually have at least two trips to the bathroom before about 7, another about mid-morning, and another soon after lunch, though sometimes there would be an extra BM or two, (or an accident or two), within that timeframe. My afternoons would usually be pretty good, and then I would have another bathroom run about dark or so, and sometimes another before bedtime. After that, I was usually "good" until about 6 or so, the next morning. Usually, if I had to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, it would be due to the need to vomit, which, of course, would also trigger explosive D, and that would usually last for a while, before I could get back to bed. As you say, the mornings were always the most "active" for me, too.

Regarding the timing, I think that the evening/night "events" are mostly due to the fact that the act of eating the biggest meal of the day, triggers a normal signal from the enteric nervous system, to have a BM. I think that's probably some sort of "instinctive" response, left over from prehistoric "programing". I always eat my biggest meal at noon, so that's when I could count on an almost certain need to visit the bathroom, very soon afterwards. The urgency of early morning "events" is probably due to the accumulation of effluent during the night, (quite a few hours, IOW), resulting in the enteric nervous system's sudden realization that the system is nearing a state of "overload", and culminating in an order to purge the system, ASAP. At least, that's how I see it, FWIW.

Love,
Tex

Courtney,

I have always gotten up early to work out before I went to work (before kids), just not as early as I do now. Exercise and running are real important to me, the running really is therapy and helps me plan my day. Like Tex said, it is the quite time of the day. When my cc sypmtoms started getting bad, I was getting up 2 to 3 times a night to have a conference call and then I could not get back to sleep so I just started getting up earlier to get my runs in before the calls really start coming in. I run on a treadmill so that my office is near by, b/c like everyone else, when I have to go there is no stopping or holding it in.

Love,

Rose
