Maggie & Other Bird Watchers

Post by Dee »

I had the opportunity to see about a dozen Roseate Spoonbill while on the airboat ride thru the Everglades while in Florida..
It was magnificient to see them in flight with their pink wings that really stood out..
I have never witnessed a bird with pink wings.
Just beautiful!

Hi Dee,
I have a couple of friends in the Atlanta area who just did that trip over the Christmas holidays. They loved it!
They were here in Galveston a recent year and saw the roseated spoonbills here. We have 'em everywhere you look. Funny cause I went with them to a birdfest in Galveston a couple of springs ago, and one of our guides was from Washington state. He got the biggest kick out of the fact that we thought nothing of seeing all these lovely birds, since most people never get to see one. I mean we appreciate their beauty, we just expect to see them there, whereas outsiders don't.
I heard lots of neat things from my friends after that trip. Glad you had such a great time!
One of these days I'm going to take that trip.

By the way, I hear that this spring there's going to be a BirdFest in Galveston, despite the devastation that still exists down there. I hope the birders will be back in droves all along that hard hit section of the coast. Their economy really needs the influx of bucks. The island city of Galveston is having a hard time coming back, but their are plenty of tourist type businesses ready for your business, like restaurants, for example. It will take a long time for it to look like it used to look, if ever. I just heard the other day that there's now NO beach where the seawall runs, and the water now comes right up to the seawall in those areas. There is beach down on the west end, I'm sure. These hurricanes really change the map when they come through these coastal areas. It makes me sad every time I think about how nice it was down there last time I was able to go.

Yours, Luce

Dee you are so lucky to have seen them. What a truly magnificent and gorgeous bird. Have them on my life list from seeing them in the Everglades a number of years ago.

Florida is on my wish list for trips since the birding is so phenominal.

Love, Maggie

Maggie,

You might also want to put the Texas Coast on your list of places to bird. We have friends in Minnesota who came down about this time of year a few years ago. I can't remember how many birds they checked off while we took them along the coast but I know it was over 100 different birds.

Hi Jan,

Texas is way high up there on the list and even before Florida since I have birded FL before. We want to take at least a couple of weeks and do the Rio Grande trail. Actually, one of the best birding spots in the U.S.

Hi all,

I got a 113 species count my first time out, about mid-April one year back in the 1990's, all in several areas that have recently been hit hard by Ike, unfortunately. However, the BirdFest people say the habitats have been greatly restored already. My trip down there this year is scheduled mid-April, so, if the habitat really is fairly well restored, and we can hit the place right after a storm, we may have another big count again this time. I hope so for my visiting friend's sake.
By the way, I had ALOT of help in spotting and ID'g those species -- really nice people down there, always willing to help out!
Yours, Luce

Hi Luce,

113 is great for a trip count but you were in a great place to get that number. My high for an outing was in Delaware - our favorite birding state - and our 2 1/2 day number was 129. It was in between seasons so we felt very lucky to get that count.

Enjoy your return trip and hope you top your list.

Love, Maggie
