12 mg of Entocort a day?

Post by jillian357 »

Morning!
I had a follow up with my gastro this week re: the recent flare I was going thru.

I seem to be doing better, but he suggested if another one presents itself he could bump up my current 9mg dosage of Entocort to 12mg. I didn't realize this was possible? He said there is no documented information stating 12mg was any more harmful than 9mg.

Has anyone done this? If so, did it help? I'm trying to stay off the Prednisone as best as I can.....

Thanks!
Jill

Hi Jill,

Your GI doc is correct. A few years ago, I found an original trial study on Entocort using doses of 9 mg per day, and 18 mg per day. The patients taking 18 mg per day reported side effects that were not significantly different from those taking 9 mg per day. The double dose increased the percentage of patients who were able to achieve remission, by roughly 10 to 15 %. Unfortunately, I can't point you to that site, though, because it was bookmarked on a computer that I rarely use anymore, and I'm not even sure which computer the bookmark is saved on. Over the years, the site has been so rarely viewed by net surfers, that it has apparently fallen way down in the Google ratings, because I can no longer locate it with the usual search criteria.

IMO, though, he might as well increase the dose to 18 mg per day, if he expects to get a significantly better response. 12 mg probably won't make enough difference to bring remission, but that's just a wild guess. It's certainly not impossible that 12 mg might be just enough to do the trick.

I agree that doubling the dose of Entocort, (or anything in between), is much safer than using Prednisone. Good luck.

Love,
Tex

Thanks, as always, Tex!

I honestly had no idea I could bump up my dose safely....up to 18mg?
That's great news!

I do think the Entocort is working, if I can just keep these intermittent flares down. Getting rid of some hidden soy has done wonders, so hopefully I'm on the right track......

Thanks again!

Love,
Jill

P.S. Only 22 days until Spring!!!

That's good news. It sounds as though you may be getting close to remission.

Tex

P. S. It's already spring here in Texas. Our nighttime lows are mostly in the 60's, and our daytime highs are generally in the 80's. Many/most of the corn fields in this part of Texas are already planted. Now if we could just get some good rains, to relieve the extreme drought conditions in this area, we would be happy campers.

WOW, I'm jealous of your weather!

We are still battling the cold temps here, with snow mixed in when you least expect it. Not the greatest weather for running outside!

Here's hoping you get some rain SOON!

Jill,

Have you needed the larger dose? How is the running going? What kind of running shoes do you prefer? I always used New Balance but recently got some Underarmours (they make shoes now) and really love them!

Aaaah, soy! It is a problem for me, too. And it seems to be hidden in so many foods! Everything I've read says that soy oil is OK because the offending protein fraction is removed during the processing. However, I have found that I still react to the soy oil. Sigh.

Hope you are on the mend.

Love,

Polly

Hi Polly,
As of yet I haven't increased the dose on the Entocort. I'm trying to save that as a last resort option I guess.

I think I am coming down with a bug, so that has slowed down my running a bit. I'm just dragging my butt right now.

Other than that, I have another half marathon on April 5th, and I have my sights on a full marathon for Sept. *crossing my fingers!* thanks for asking!

I've seen the Under Armour shoes advertised in my running magazine..too cool!
So you like them? I bet they are great.

So far I have had two pairs of Asics, one pair of Saucony's, and I just bought a pair of Brooks, but I have yet to break them in just yet. So far I like the Saucony's the best, but I almost bought a pair of New Balance too. I guess it's just a matter of what feels good and if you need stability shoes like I do. I'm an overpronater, so I need shoes designed for that.

Soy is EVIL....and everywhere! I was mostly shocked at how much soy there is in the GF foods. I didn't realize until I really started to read those labels.
Sorry to hear you have a problem with it too....it's challenging to remove that from our diets, even more so than the gluten in my opinion!

Take care, and Happy Running in those cool new shoes!

Jill

Hmmmm, back when I was working and on my feet all day I had a pair of Saucony walking shoes. I absolutely loved them. I wish I could find the same thing today. I've since had a pair of Saucony running shoes but (possibly since I don't run) I didn't experience the same comfort level.

Shirley,

Have you tried roadrunnersports.com I order my shoes through them since I can not find the kind of Saucony running shoes I wear here in Knoxville. I have been wearing Sauconys for over 20 years. I have wide feet and I over pronate as well. I have tried other shoes, but I always come back to Saucony as they are the only ones that are comfortable to me.

Thanks Rose,
I will take a look. I'd love to have another really comfortable pair of shoes. They are few and far between, mainly due to bunions.

Hi Carrie,

For some reason or other, I keep getting an "Address Not Found" error, every time I try to load that link. I'll try again later, in case it's just a temporary server problem.

Hugs,
Tex

Hmmmmmmm. Yeah, now I can access the site, but they want me to register, and pay for the article, (which ain't likely to happen). I'm a member of JAMA, and one or two other similar organizations, but my log-in doesn't work on "clinicalevidence", unfortunately.
