After mentioning to Angy that candied turmeric might be one way to eat enough, I though I'd try making some.

Bad, Bad idea. :mallet:

I peeled and sliced the turmeric (with rubber gloves to avoid stains), and put it in a syrup for nearly an hour, all as per a recipe for making candied ginger.

It was repulsive. Hard to describe the taste - sugar sweet, but also this intense sort of dusty spice flavour that is intensely savoury and just really unpleasant. Gave me heartburn for hours after trying just a tiny bit. Doesn't taste even a tiny bit like ginger (despite being closely related plants). And the texture was just too woody. On the upside, the syrup went a really pretty golden colour, even though it tasted horrid. :ill:

Most recipes you figure you can modify into something that works. Not this. The whole batch went straight in the bin, I wasn't even going to kid myself that I'd try it again later.

I am LOL reading your recipe! Very amusing. It's rare that one sees a recipe using the words "horrid, repulsive, and heartburn". HAHAHA. I am impressed by your creativity, though. Thanks for sharing your experience and for starting my day with a laugh!

At least you made the effort to try and make something good.to eat. Shame it went in the bin...but never mind now u know what it tastes like you might get another idea....dont give up... I know what you mean with the tumeric taste lyn,,, :crazy:

i guess thats why i only use it in stir fry... :roll:

I do like to experiment. Sometimes it works, sometimes it needs work. Very rare for things to be unsalvageable.

One of my other classics was using red cabbage with egg. I often make an easy meal by just microwaving some vegies, adding beaten egg and either zapping again, or for a better result, cooking in the oven. Makes a sort of frittata, spanish tortilla thing. I did something like this once using raw red cabbage, and it reacted with the egg to turn it a horrible blue/green colour. In that case it tasted fine, but I couldn't eat it all as the colour was very offputting. Haven't repeated that experiment either. :lol:

On the other hand, my cheats chicken congee worked well. Microwave packaged rice porridge as usual, but using chicken stock instead of water. Add some sliced cooked chicken meat and zap again for a few seconds to heat the chicken. Place in serving bowl. Top with sliced green onion and a drizzle of sesame oil.
Eat for breakfast. :cat:

I'll leave fresh turmeric alone for a while......

That sounds like a great tasting, and nutritious breakfast. It also sounds like something that would work just as well for virtually any other meal.
