Extreme Pain from MC
Help does anyone or has anyone has extreme pain with MC. My GI told me that MC does not cause pain. I have had every test done that I can think of, including 4 CAT-SCANs, colonoscopy, blood tests, etc. I have been on the couch for 2 weeks in pain. I was diagnosed with MC 3 weeks ago and am getting some relief with Encort and Levsin. Also my liver enzymes are very elevated and was told MC would not cause my enzyems to go up. Has anyone experenced either of these? Thank you
My pain was lower left and turned out to be diverticulosis. I did have other pain at different times but not ongoing.
My liver enzymes are elevated, too. I do have a gallstone (it has never bothered me) and my doc is insisting that I go to a surgeon. I think it's from Pravachol just like it was the first time from Lipitor.
I think we can raise the flag for your GI
I'd bet a lot of us have had plenty of pain with MC.I hope you are reading on this site and have found that eliminating gluten is your very first step. Almost all of us (there are a few exceptions) are gluten sensitive. Also, check out www.enterolab.com
I'm certain Tex will be along soon to answer your questions.

Hi,
Welcome to our internet family. I'm sorry to hear that you are having so much pain, but I can assure you, from experience, that your doctor is quite wrong. It's true that some MC patients do not experience any significant pain, but many of us suffer from moderate to extreme pain, at various times during our reactions. The information that your doctor is repeating is from the original medical descriptions of MC, and that information is not only way out of date, but it was incorrect when it was originally written, about 25 years ago.
Most of my pain came from the abdominal pressure caused by extreme gas/bloating, but I also had severe joint pain, and general body aches and pains, including headaches, a stiff, sore neck, backache, etc. The pain symptoms from MC can feel like a severe case of the flu, for many of us. Many say their pain is at times on a level with the pain of childbirth.
Concerning your elevated liver enzymes:
Certain enzyme increases can be connected with MC, while others would indicate some other issue. Which liver enzymes are elevated, and by how much - a little or a lot? Are they more than three times the normal upper limit?
Again, welcome aboard. I hope that we can help you to achieve remission, as quickly as possible.
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
By the way, your doc will insist that gluten (or diet) has nothing to do with MC. We know from our own experience that is incorrect.
Look at all the intolerances under our names. Gluten, dairy and soy are the big three.
I am not taking any meds just eliminating my intolerances. Others are taking Entocort and other meds to reduce the inflammation.
I know this is all overwhelming but Tex and the PP helped me and they will help you.

Welcome to our family,
When I was first diagnosed I had severe pain. While I wasn't told it could be due to the MC it was not taken seriously. Finally after about 2 mos. on predisone (that's what worked because of another med. they had me taking that I was unknowingly allergic to) the pain went away. I spent many a day curled up on the couch dozing.
I know that when I've had relapses I find the pain tends to come from eating veggies. I would suggest you keep a food/elimination diary to help you pinpoint what might be making things worse.
Before I was diagnosed my liver enzymes were all over the chart - one time fine and the next very high. A sonogram found I had a 1" gallstone. It never caused me any pain. I did chose to have my gallbladder out.
Good luck on this journey. Feel free to ask ANY question. We've all been there.

Hello,
Your doctor is wrong. Apart from abdominal & rectal pain, like Tex I get a type of Fibromyalgia with pain all over my body. Funnily it starts before I have a flare & seems to decrease once the D starts in earnest. It is my signal that all hell is about to break loose. We all seem to react in our own different ways but there are often similarities in out experiences.

Liz,
Thanks for helping clarify my pain to me. I am in a flare now that started with severe leg cramps. They were bad enough that they woke me from a sound sleep and I had to get up to walk them off. This is the third time that has happened. Now I have a new signal.

I am also new to MC, and I had moderate to severe cramping in the begining, and then developed this horrible refered back pain, bilaterally in the flank area almost like kidney pain. I even went to the ER (which I never do) this was all before I was diagnosed. During the healing process when I have had lots of D for a day or two the flank pain returned. I have had great success with the Guts and Glory diet outlined in the book "Restoring Your Digestie Health" by Jordan Rubin and Joseph Brasco. I was just diagnosed 4 weeks ago, and since I have been on the diet I am about 90% improved and tomorrow I will start reintroducing foods that are recomended. I will let you know how it goes. I lost my galbladder 20 years ago, and I do not have elevated liver enzymes. My first question to you is what other meds are you on that might elevate liver enzymes. Statins (drugs given to reduce cholesterol) are nortorious for this.
