Oli spill and more

Post by Liz »

A ship carrying containers of fertilizer kept going during the recent cyclone that we had running down the coast. Thirty two containers were lost overboard and one of them pierced the hull. Over 100 tons of oil has been released onto our shores, especially the beautiful Moreton and Bribie Islands & the Sunshine Coast. It is an environmental disaster.

The oil is bad enough but the problems that could be caused by the high-nitrogen fertilizer escaping from the containers could kill any wildlife and sea creatures in the area.

Hi Liz:
Just watched the news video's from the oil spill. That is so tragic to see especially the possible loss of wildlife and sea life. It would truly anger me as well knowing that those operating the ship involved chose NOT to disclose to authorities how much oil was expelled. Hopefully, those doing the clean up will beable to eliminate the majority of the hazard this has caused.

Thank You for sharing this with all of us.
Love and God Bless:
Jodi

Oh Liz, that is a horrible disaster!! I haven't been watching the news today so didn't know about it. Good Luck to all the ones doing the cleanup, etc.

Liz,

I saw that on the news - what a mess. The maritime shipping industry seems to have more than it's fair share of people who make irresponsible decisions that have grave consequences.

I hope the disaster is not as bad as it appears to be.

That's so awful. Sometimes I'm ashamed to be a human- poor living creatures, poor nature, always suffering because of us and our 'lifestyles'. Maybe one day we'll stop thinking we're at the top of creation and realize we are no more important than any other part of nature; that what is sane is the balance of all things, rather than dominating everthing. Maybe then we'd stop being so destructive.

It seems that the situation is even worse than was thought. They think that the oil spill was actually more than 200 thousand tonnes.

Liz, I am so sorry. Somehow, I missed it on the news. I must have been on the computer.

We watched the video, Australia, last night and really enjoyed it.

Liz,

I looked on the internet to get the latest this a.m. It sure does look bad. I'm sorry that the folks seem slow in activitating the clean up efforts. I was in Alaska when the Exxon Valdez had the large spill up there almost 20 years ago, so know what they are facing.

As always, I'll keep the Aussies in my prayers.

What a horrible disaster for the coast line, the wildlife and fish but mostly for the people of Austrailia who have suffered so much this past year.

Hello All,

The cleanup still goes on. Who know how far the damage will reach. Whales will soon be migrating along the coast & it could have a devasting effect on them. Their food will be affected as well. The fertiliser is another big worry. They are searching for them but they are in pretty deep water. Trawlers can't work in the area because if they snagged one they could capsize. That is without the damage that would result if & when they corrode & the contents leak out. It would be much more than an algae bloom.

When we used to spend weekends on the water in our boat over at Moreton we often spent the night at North Light, which is just inside the Cape when we wanted to go out deep sea fishing early. It was a beautiful spot but it is now blackened & ugly. We used to through stuff to the pelicans when we were cleaning our fish on the back of the boat & I shudder to think of what this is doing to them & the other wild life.

Liz,

Have you heard how the turtles at Mon Repose are going after the cyclone?

I saw some film that Bargara was badly eroded, and the rookery was affected with some clutches being removed for human hatching. But we don't get any follow up reports down south. Thought you might get a bit better news.

Hello Lyn,

Here is a link to then government site with information re the turtles at Mon Repos.

http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/projects/media/?release=1410

It was fortunate that Hamish did not do more damage than it did. They are such unpredictable things. Fortunately it weakened & moved further out from the coast as it came further south & then back tracked & petered out into a low.

Thanks Liz,

It's good to know most of the clutches made it. The news made it sound worse.

Cheers,
Lyn
