Hairdresser Just Diagnosed With Celiac..
I go once a month to get my hair trimmed and last month my hairdresser was sharing with me about having an endoscopy scheduled and bloodwork.
So, I go to my appt. today and she told me that yes, she has celiac and her GI said it was the worst case that he has ever seen. He thinks she's had it 30 or better years. She is 60 years old.
I said, Honey, get a notepad out and I'll start naming some things off for you to pick up at the HFS, and gave her my cell number so she can give me a call whenever she feels the need. I even offered to take her to the HFS to get her familiar with the GF area.
She said she did make a trip to a local GF bakery and bought a loaf of GF raisin bread, but ended up spitting it out after the first bite..
I'm thinking of making her a loaf of my GF bread and taking it to her as a join the club welcoming!
The only thing I questioned was she was told "no dark colas"????? Why do you think that is???
She's a tiny, little thing...
Love
Dee~~

Hmm...Dee, I've heard that before about "no dark colas," but since I don't drink them anyway it was never an issue for me. The only thing I can think of is the caramel coloring, which I've heard sometimes/used to contain/s gluten. However, if the label says it's GF, it should be. In my GF,CF,SF Shopping Guide all the major brands (Coke, Pepsi, and Dr. Pepper) as well as many others are listed as safe. When I was diagnosed with Celiac, my GI gave me a really outdated brochure, which I fortunately realized was grossly inaccurate. Perhaps something similar is going on here.
You're so sweet to think of making your hairdresser a loaf of bread! Maybe you can work out a trade on services :-).

Courtney is quite correct, of course. There's a lot of confusion about caramel color, because in some parts of the world, it's made from wheat. In North America, it's gluten-free, (it's made from corn). D. D. Williamson is the world leader in caramel color production. Here is their allergy statement about caramel color:

If you have any other questions about caramel color, you can find the answers at their site. Here is their main page:

Caramel color is only a problem for people who need to avoid corn, or sulfites. If you read the celiac boards, you will occasionally come across posts by someone who says that caramel color causes them to react, so they naturally assume that it contains gluten. The reality, though, is that they are probably intolerant of either corn, or sulfites.
Love,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Morning Dee,
You are truly a special and supportive person. It is so hard for someone getting hit with her condition at a later age. Much harder to adapt and your support will be so important.
I am not a cola drinker - or any soda drinker - but have heard the same thing.
Love, Maggie

You are indeed and Angel, Dee. Hope she will listen to you because I know you have an awful lot to contribute.
Dark cola.......... never heard it mentioned before. Be interesting if you found out why her doc said that. If he says "gluten" then we'll know it's outdated info.
Love, Shirley

KUDO'S DEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You never cease to amaze me how thoughtful you truly are to others. Hopefully, she'll become part of our family soon! There is so much I've learned in just 10 months on this site that I know in my heart I would still be an emotional wreck if I had not had Gloria's help finding my way here.
Yes, Gloria I remember who came and rescued me when I didn't get a reply from the old site. Love Ya!
If support is what your hairdresser needs, we will all be here for her and welcome her with open arms.
Love and God Bless:
Jodi

Jodi,
So many were seeking help on the old site (including me) and few people were responding - I always felt so badly for the newbies. I'm glad you joined us - you've become part of this family and have given so much love to the group.
Love you too,
Gloria

Love Ya!
