Soy Free Margarine

Post by Dee »

Earth Balance, known for their dairy-free vegan butter substitutes, has created a soy-free version of their buttery spread. Yes, people, there is a dairy-free soy-free “butter” that can be spread on toast and used for baking!

Recognizing that soy is one of the top 8 allergens, Earth Balance took the soybean oil out for their Soy-Free Spread, using a natural oil blend of palm fruit oil, safflower, canola and olive oils. Rickard Werner, vice president and general manager of Earth Balance® states in a press release:

“We feel that there is a great demand for alternatives to traditional spreads that contain food allergens such as soy - one of the top eight most common food allergens according to the FDA*. At Earth Balance®, we pride ourselves on providing innovative and great tasting products for people who are vegan, suffer from food allergies or those simply seeking healthy alternatives. We feel confident that our new Soy Free Spread will be a hit with all.”

Should be in the stores in May.....

That's great news, Dee! It's about time that someone recognizes that there's a market for soy-free margarine. I still haven't seen the Mother's margarine in my local stores yet, but I am enjoying the dark chocolate Elite candy bars.

I also bought some DF, SF whipped topping for Passover made by Kineret that was in the freezer section. It's made with palm oil and doesn't have any soy or dairy in it. I'll need to defrost it, then whip it, so I haven't tasted it yet.

Shirley,
I've seen SF mayonaisse (Mosso - from Poland) and DF, EF mayonnaise (Vegannaise), but never one free of both. I think you are able to eat eggs if you're going Paleo, so Dee's suggestion might work for you. Otherwise, you'd have to make your own using a recipe I posted in Dee's kitchen.

I'm loving Passover!

Hi Gloria,
I THINK I tried your receipe for mayonnaise in Dee's "room" but I must have done something wrong. It turned out like flavored oil. I thought I'd try it again sometime (maybe in a blender) and add the oil a lot slower. Perhaps it will have a different texture. Also, I think I substituted Safflower Oil instead of Canola oil. Also, it might not have been your receipe at all!!! I can't remember.

I looked it up and it was one of Dee's receipes that I goofed up.
I found yours for Soy Free, Egg Free Mayonnaise. I'll try it sometime too even though I apparently don't have to worry about eggs. Just looking for something with the right texture and taste. I've loved Hellmans Original for years and years. I just wish it wasn't made with soy oil. Never knew that could be a problem until recently.

I'm starting off on this thing pretty slow. I know it's going to be very difficult to eliminate soy. Butter (margarine) isn't a problem for me because I actually do eat real butter and have for years. I'm so thankful to NOT have a dairy intolerance.

Thanks, Shirley

Yes, it must be made in a blender and the oil needs to be added slowly. I don't think it matters what type of oil that you use. The consistency is a little thinner than regular mayonnaise - maybe because there isn't any egg in it. I've reduced the amount of water and changed the recipe to reflect that.

If I could eat eggs, I'd just buy the Spectrum mayonnaise. I'm glad to see that you can eat butter. I'm mostly satisfied with Ghee as a substitute, though it doesn't work for everything.

Thanks

This is the first time I've seen the whipped topping. Since it's frozen, it probably wouldn't be available online. There isn't a URL on the package.

Here is the website for the Elite chocolate bars: http://www.israeliproducts.com/page/IP/PROD/FOD231

Note that they mention
Some bars are available as Kosher for Passover, which are soy lecithin free.
I've been buying the bittersweet bars. They're available for $1.99 on their website. They have sugar in them and I eat them as a regular candy bar.

I haven't found these products in the regular chain grocery stores. I go to stores that specialize in providing foods from all over the world and other unique products. I don't know if these types of stores are available in other parts of the country that don't have large foreign populations.

I did a search for "Cincinnati Kosher stores" and found this page: http://www.nhs-cba.org/jewishcinci.htm I don't know how close Cincinnati is to you, but maybe it will help.

Didn't see any in sticks, though.

Ooh! It would be great if Whole Foods were carrying it now. Did you check to see if the tubs were soy-free? How much were they? It seems to me that I just saw some soft Earth Balance margarine at a grocery store near me, but it had soy in it.

The tubs are red & a cream color on the outside and it has soy free on it.
$3.99 a tub at Whole Foods.
I wanted to do comparison shopping between my local HFS & Whole Foods since it is an hour drive up to Whole Foods. Definitely worth the drive to stock up at Whold Foods.
I'm hooked on Glutino crackers and they were $2.00 cheaper a box.
I wish that I would have had you ship me some of the deals that you received on the Passover items that you found Gloria. Nothing here.
