constipation help

Post by melissah »

this is/was my first flare since being diagnosed, sadly, I haven't had a bm in 3 days. Any suggestions for something to help that won't throw me back into constant potty break cramping would be wonderful. I know 3 days is a laugh for a lot of you, but I'd like to get a handle on it before it goes too far.
thanks! melissah

MELISSAH---I can very well relate to being BOUND UP-----I have been dealing with this since I had back surgery (will be 3years ) tis like pooping out a BRICK when ya try~~~~~~

And NO 3 dayz is NOTHING to Laugh at either-----One day for me is a MEGGA ISSUE--
!. Fibercon DID and DOES NOT help me--nor any of the other CONS!!!
2. MY GP OK-d stool soften with SENNA!!! that helped a bit~~~
3. Then I tried Milk of Magnesia---ZIP~~~~~
4. 5 and 6---- I did any laxative U can think of--and #7 drinking allllllllll fluid didnt help *eye-tha* or it did was blow me up!!! 8--9 and 10--I did an enema --TO START---

Soooooo---this was my solution---GROUND FLAX----1 tablespoons twice a day mixed in with my container of YOGURT or applesauce--I do this for a lunch snack and an evening snack--

AND if I am really really bound---I have used (at night) 2 plain stool softeners---to help MOVE STUFF thru the CANAL!!!

Ohhhhhh--how I know what U are going thru----- We know U cannot keep shoving anything up the wazoo all the time---

Did U speak to your GP or GI about this????
Dont forget --WE are ALL different----I just thought I would let U know how WELL I understand and relate what I NOW do for MYSELF ------

Hope U find what U need--

Barbara

Hi Melissa,

I often went through a similar cycle, when I was reacting. I would have uncontrollable D for a few days, and then when it ended, it would be 3 or 4 days before I had a BM of any kind, but when it resumed, the BMs would range from C to perfectly formed "projectiles" for a few days or so, and then the cycle would start over. Sometimes there would be 5 or 6 days with no activity, because I ate very little fiber, for a couple of years, while recovering. I tried prunes, and things such as that, but I never could tell that they made much difference. (It never dawned on me to try flax seed, back in those days). I finally got to where I usually didn't even try anything - I just let the "chips" fall where they may, though I have to admit that there were a few times when I was afraid that I would end up in the ER, waiting while the doctor summoned a crew with a jackhammer.

Barbara is quite correct - ground flax seed is a very good laxative. The flax seed hulls are what do the trick, rather than the oil, (though flax seed oil may soften stools somewhat, of course).

Are you by any chance taking supplemental calcium? Calcium can cause C. The proper way to take supplemental calcium is to take it along with the proper balance of magnesium. Magnesium is a laxative, of course, so the combination, when properly balanced by proportions, should help to regulate BM consistency. These article should help to shed some light on that, if you are interested. As Barbara mentioned, things such as this are best cleared with your doc, as it may affect your overall treatment:

I'm getting Mom some ground flax.... Maybe that will help her. All Metamucil is doing is making her bloat up. Did you have that problem with ground flax, Barbara? I'll try anything to try and help her if I can get it down her throat. HaHa She absolutely hates the Metamucil. I told her if she had a bad enough attack of Diverticulitis she'd be in the hospital and that is the only reason she is taking it now.
