Newbie & my experience

Post by nthprime »

Hi to all!

Background
I first started feeling sharp pains in my abdominal region in 2002
I was diagnosed with LC in 2004
I took Asacol for 3 months and symptoms went away

Now it came back and I feeling tired, cramps, D, etc
Back on Asacol and its been almost a month but hopefully medicine starts showing results...

I also had a prick allergy test done and for food allergies it showed
Beef : one symptom is anxiety within about 1 hour and dry scalp
Pork
Lamb
Any dairy products

Supplements I take:
Multivitamin that is made from whole food (not synthetic)
Cod Liver Oil
Prostate Support Blend

I also have asthma but does not limit me to what I do. I Mt bike, road cycle, swim, and what ever else seems fun

I just started taking a Probiotic/Prebiotic (empty stomach with water) yesterday because I can't take the fact that I am so tired by the end of the day.

Biggest note however is that I was a heavy user of NSAIDs in highschool and through college. I was taking about 800mg 3-4 times a day for patella tendinitis. I was taking this so that I could play soccer. I am not sure if this is what eventually triggered my LC

I used to have acid reflux but changed my diet and it went away.

********************************************
Some questions

Do SSRIs aggravate LC? I am on 40mg of fluoxitine

Does COD Liver Oil help? I take it straight

What is a good pain reliever? I know caffeine aggravates my condition...

Thank you for your time,
Jorge

Hi Jorge,

Welcome to the board. I have to get back to work, so I can't address but a couple of your questions. There is a very good chance that NSAIDs caused your MC. Because of that, the only safe pain relievers for MC patients, are acetaminophen, (Tylenol), or one of the narcotic-based meds, (Opioids).

Some SSRIs can indeed aggravate LC. In fact, some of them have been shown to be the initial cause of LC, for some patients. Usually, (though not always), stopping the use of the drug will usually stop the symptoms, after a few days or so, (if it is the cause of the flare).

Again, welcome aboard.

Jorge,

Asacol is not very effective for bringing remission with MC, especially the second time around. Sometimes it works, but it can take a long time to bring remission, if it works at all. It does much better as a maintenance drug, after remission is achieved.

Most members have much better results, if they use Entocort. You might ask your doctor about it. If that does not bring relief, you may have to remove all gluten from your diet, along with all dairy products, and anything with soy in it. Many of us here control our symptoms by diet alone, and some members have to use a combination of diet and Entocort, in the most difficult cases.

:welcome: Jorge

I would imagine that Xcessive use of NSAID's was part of your issues-----cus I know it was for me---

Asacol did nothing for me----Colazal is what got me onto the wellness road-----and when I am in serious pain from an ailment--ALEVE works terriific--and thats on the advice of my GP-----and GI!!!

Yet I dont over due the ALLEVE---TYLENOL alleviates my minor systoms-

Do hope U get to feeling better--and hope to see more posts as to your success in getting better--

Barbara

PS. I didnt have good results with entocort either---

Welcome Jorge!

NSAIDS are definitely a trigger for the disease for a number of us. I am so happy that you found our site and family and I am sure the support you will get will definitely make things easier. You seem to have been proactive so far with this disease and that is definitely the way to start and handle it.

Again Welcome!

Maggie
