Stopping Asacole!! and experimenting

Post by angy »

Hi guys, srry i aint been in... been busy with work and had some off days...

I have to say that i have been experimenting with the mesalazine.
I was originally on 3000mg then reduced to 2000mg daily over a period of 1yr

Although im now officially supposed to be taking 1000mg daily..i have to say i dont
The reason for this is because im experimenting with it..to see if it actually works for me. Im experimenting with meds and supplements.

I have been trying to rule out the cause of my aching muscles and bones and ocassional itchy skin...not to mention mild hair loss..let alone the usual mc symtoms.

When i last spoke with my gi doc i told him about the muscle and bone issue. He tried to determine if i got the aches and pains before the asacole...during and for how long...Well i find it difficult to determine this because i had sore bones and muscles slighty before my diagnosis and before being prescribed asacole...

When i first started asacole, it was a full dose for 3 months 3000 mg. It did help my gut for a while i have to admit.. It wasnt until a little later i got slight headaches and itchy skin, but during that time i still had slight muscle and bone problems..so i couldnt identify this being related to the med...It was reduced after 6 months to 2000mg daily. Then a further 6 months later i dropped it to 1000mg myself..

Anyway previously before dx I always stuck to a gf diet so i decided to reduce the asacole (now 1000mg daily with docs consent) and see how that would pan out. It seemed ok i felt pretty much ok for a while..so i stopped taking the meds for 2-3 days at a time. Then when i had a flare i decided to take more asacole to try and get over that...I found that when i took a further amount of asacole (for approx 4-5 days continual) my bones started to hurt even more...Now i have been testing this for the past couple of months so far..

The difficulty with this experimenting is trying to analyse...symptoms with taking asacole...symptoms without asacole....symtoms and possible relief with supplements and thats pretty much all supplements..(vit c, d, iron, calcium and multi vits and Symtoms without the supplements...ive tried all paths on a different level.

Now i found that if i stop all the supplements and asacole at once..I get very tired and fatigued...now i know this isnt a side effect of asacole..i reckon its the mc and possible lack of vits (deficiency).. Then when i stop the asacole and take the vits only i feel pretty much not too bad but get an achy gut and soft stools..i find eating becomes a problem...when this happens i will take the asacole for an emergency to help with the flare or dodgy gut. Ill then stay on the asacole and supplements for a while (usually a few days)...so im pretty much taking both then ive discovered that my bones are aching pretty bad...

Ive come to the conclusion that asacole is causing my bones and muscles to be worse than they usually are..but helps when i have flare up and dodgy gut..

Now dont think im refusing to take my meds but ive got to see whats causing what...Now im thinking i do need the asacole for my gut but its killing my muscles and bones..im so convinced of that...

I might have missed a couple of things here so guys!! if you have anything to add please be my guest..

Angy,

I think you might be right. MC can indeed cause aches and pains, and so can Asacol, if you are allergic to it. Maybe one of the other 5-ASA meds would work. Have you ever tried Lialda, for example? That's a newer med, and it might work better. Or something a little different, such as Colasal, might work. There's always Entocort, of course. The point is, if you think that the Asacol is causing problems, it probably is. Your body is the best judge.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
