Casein

Post by no-more-muffins »

I have read that many people with celiac are "lactose intolerant" while their gut heals. I have also learned from this board that many people with MC are casein intolerant. Do you think that most of those people with celiac are really in fact casein intolerant?

What percentage of people with MC would you say are sensitive to dairy (Tex, I know you have an answer for this, lol). AND, for those people who tolerate some dairy, what can you tolerate? Are you lactose intolerant or casein intolerant?

(I am wondering these things because I REALLY hate to cut out dairy from my diet. I LOVE cheese!) Who wants to eat a baked potato without butter and sour cream?

NMM,

As Joan suggested, there are alternatives for using on baked or mashed potatoes, or other foods. Some use olive oil for some purposes, and Polly suggests chicken broth, (with other herbs and spices, if desired), for example. These days, I can eat butter and sour cream, etc., but you know what? After avoiding all that for 2 or 3 years, I have never gone back to using butter and sour cream on my baked potatoes - I eat them plain, and I don't miss all the trimmings at all. For a few years, I tried all sorts of GF bread, because I thought that I just couldn't do without bread, but I no longer eat any bread, now. If I need a wrap, I use a corn tortilla. I don't miss bread at all.

Here is why celiacs are lactose intolerant, until their intestines heal: Various forms of trauma to the proximal small intestine, will suppress the normal production of digestive enzymes. Any form of enteritis, for example, will virtually always cause a reduction, (or in some severe cases, even complete sessation), of lactase enzyme production in the brush border region of the small intestine. The lactase enzyme is the first to go, and if the enteritis continues, the other enzymes, in order, will follow suit, until eventually, a patient can end up "intolerant" of virtually any sugar, (or carb), if the problem progresses far enough. Lactase, of course, is necessary for the proper digestion of lactose. As the gut heals, the enzyme production slowly resumes, in reverse order, so that lactase is the last enzyme to have normal production restored.

While it's certainly possible that some, (even many), celiacs might be casein intolerant, most likely they are simply lactose intolerant, due to the damage to the architecture of their small intestine. The true test, of course, is whether or not they can reintroduce dairy products into their diet, after their gut completes the healing process.

It appears that very, very few of us are not casein intolerant, though I don't know what the actual percentage might be. I would suspect that at least 90 to maybe 95 % of us are casein intolerant. That's one of the reasons why I suspect that I might just be a celiac, because I am not intolerant of casein, (nor soy).

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
