I am considering having a problem tooth removed and getting an implant. Had a bridge and that didn't work and now that the tooth has more problems in a quandry.
Since we can't take nsaids for imflammation and there are so few antibiotics that don't cause me problems I am wondering at the advisability of going through with an implant
Thanks

Grannyh,
I have not had an implant but I am a dental hygienist and know a little about them. Dental implants have come a long way in recent years. They are used much more widely than ever before. People usually have very little problems with them. Ask your dentist if you would even need to take antibiotics and maybe you can take tylenol.
Sometimes when an implant is not advisable for some reason my dentist that I work for will recommend a removable partial denture. This happened to my MIL recently. She had been taking Fosamax for years and had to have a tooth extracted and between the oral surgeon and the dentist they decided she should have a RPD instead. She is very comfortable with it.

I have had one tooth implant for a couple of years now and will have several more by the time I am done with the dental restoration plan laid out for me. I have not had any trouble at all with mine. However, I did take the antibiotics suggested at the time of the implant and any other time I have any oral surgery. Figured taking them was better than having infections of some kind. I am on Asacol as a maintenance drug for the MC and I haven't had much trouble with the antibiotics. Did experience some nausea last spring while I was on one session of them but I tried to start eating more at the time I took them and got through it OK.
I don't know how much they affect you. If you are doing diet alone you probably will have a problem. I just don't want any bone infections or anything like that. I didn't want to take the chance.
I am pleased with the implant I have that is completed. I am hoping I will do as well with the new ones.
I don't know if this helps any but it's how I handled itl
Love, Shirley

Thank you! I had all of my upper teeth restored. Have one bridge that seems to be working. We have been unable to do the lower teeth because of problems with one tooth on the uppers. Restoration of upper and lower was to take about 6 month.. will be two years in September since I started.
I gave the information to my dentist that I got here. She said she is hopeful that there will be improvements in root canals in the future. But agrees that people with suppressed immune systems might have more problems with root canals than basically healthy folks.
My dentist is the daughter of my family doctor and they keep each other informed about what I can and cannot take. Now to get the the other dentist more in the loop who would be putting in the posts. He knows that I have CC but he really doesn't know much about the illness. My dentist provides me with the stuff to numb me for surgery and I take it to him (he has done two surgeries already on that tooth that needs to be extracted). I could try one more time to save the tooth but since it has a root canal and the other two surgeries and bone grafts have been been fine there is more problem with roots.
My dentist said we could do a partial plate or implants.. she said the plate doesn't provide the same stability as the implants would.
I take one entocort a day and have had a fairly "normal" life for a couple of years now.

Grannyh,
Sounds like you have a good relationship with your dentist and doctor and that helps a lot.
It is my understanding that we have over active immune systems rather than suppressed immune systems.
Your dentist is right that an implant is more stable than a partial, but it is an option if an implant becomes not an option. Does that make sense? Anyway, good luck, I hope everything goes well for you.

Pat,
While it's true that our immune systems are "corrupted", and they do indeed promote certain "specific" reactions that are not possible with "normal" immune systems, I'm not sure that it has ever been proven that they are generally "over-active", (on a global basis). Even if they are, however, after taking Entocort for a couple of years, her immune system would have to be somewhat suppressed, (that's how the corticosteroids are able to suppress the inflammation, after all).
That said, I find this whole concept of "over-active" immune systems to be rather confusing, so I could certainly be wrong. I wish that someone would do some extensive research on it, to clarify the situation. Maybe that research has already been done, but I've never run across it, if it's been documented.
