Spasms or................

Post by Mars »

I'm beginning to wonder if what I am attributing to "kidney stone-like pain" could be spasms or colon problems. ????? I am thinking that it may be another MC flair or colon spasms.

I made an appointment with my GP but can't get into see him until the 20th of July. Other symptoms are general fatigue, cramping/spasm, general funk and stress. The pain is mainly in my left side (back) about an inch or two above where you would place your "hand on your hips". At times I have somewhat the same pain on my right side - same place but not as intense.

I'm thinking more and more that it is related to the MC instead of what I thought was kidney stones. The CAT scan and the xrays didn't show any stones so I guess that kidney stones have been ruled out. Although, last time the CAT scan showed nothing either right before surgery! Imagine that! LOL

I have put on so much weight in the last year - I watch what I eat and rairly snack but the weight keeps going up. I am also finding that the GERD isn't quite under control with the Nexium. I haven't been able to change the Nexium though because nothing else controls the GERD, I've tried.

Any thoughts?

Love to all,
Mars

Hmmmmm. That description of the pain doesn't fit in with my experience with pain due to various intestinal issues, (MC, diverticulitis, etc.). I have been lucky enough to have never had any kidney issues, (that I'm aware of, at least), but I would suspect that the description you gave would fit that situation, (the vertical location, and the observation that the pain seems to be more toward the back). Most of my pain was generally located within a rough diamond shape, from a few inches above the belly button, down and outward, toward slightly above the hip bones, and then tapering down again, to where the sun don't shine. That said, we all seem to have slightly different symptoms.

Could it be a kidney infection? Maybe this article will offer a little insight:

I hear you about the weight issue. I used to never limit what I ate, (caloriewise), and never had a problem. Now that I watch it, it keeps sneakin' up on me. :glassesclean:

Dear Mars,

The area you are describing your pain is where my brother had his when he was having gallbladder problems. I know most who have had that problem had pain higher up. Just a thought.

Every since I was diagnosed with MC I have had weight gain problems. They say that stress can also cause it, even if you don't change your eating patterns. I know that all of 07 and most of 08 was stressful with my Mom first being sick, then passing, and then settling the estate.

Good luck in figuring this out. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

Thanks Tex - I forgot to mention that I have moderate blood in my urinalysis. It increased dramatically from one week to another which is why they suspected kidney stones. It is microscopic and I am seeing nothing when going to the bathroom.

Jan - gallbladder removed years ago.

The pain is driving me so NUTS! It is a cramping/nagging ache that prolly ranks somewhere in the range of 5 - 7 on a pain scale. I am in misery almost all the time and they can't seem to find the problem.

Love,
Mars

The blood and pain would certainly be consistent with a kidney infection, but one would think that the doctors would be able to track it down. With that level of pain, the 20th is a long way off. That's a long time to allow an infection to continue to develop, (to say nothing of contending with the pain all that time). Do you think there is a chance that your doctor might be able to see you sooner, if you whined a little? You might need to go to the ER if the symptoms get worse. I'm pretty sure that a kidney infection is a lot more serious than a simple UTI.

I'm quite concerned about you also, Mars. I don't have any ideas but hope you will either get in to see the Doc. or go to ER.

I've never had kidney stones, but the pain you describe sounds like the muscle spasms I've had over the years. When I first had the pain years ago, I thought it was a kidney infection. It is in my middle back and continually throbs when I have it, keeping me awake all night. Now when I feel one coming, I'll put a heat patch on it and it goes away.

I don't think that's what you have because you have blood in your urine, but I thought I'd pass it along in case it fits your symptoms. I agree that you should try to see a professional as soon as you can.

Hi Mars Bar!

I'd still be concerned about kidney stones. Occasionally they don't show up, even on CT scan (as you already know). Also, you are having bleeding and the pain is consistent with a kidney diagnosis.
I'd recommend being a squeaky wheel and getting your appt. moved up.

Sorry to hear that you are having these problems. Everything sucks when you don't feel well. Hpoefully, things will improve SOON. Keeping fingers and toes crossed for you.

Love,
