Hi Tami,

Sorry to hear about the bronchitis - it really seems to be a persistent problem for you.

I'm not aware of any comprehensive list of medications that are contraindicated for MC. We need to compile a list one of these days, when we have the time. There are a few lists available, but all of the ones that I have seen, are very incomplete.

Regarding antibiotics - unfortunately, augmentin is one that seems to carry the highest risk of triggering a C. diff infection, especially for someone with MC. You are doing the right thing, by taking a probiotic, especially for a few weeks after you finish taking the antibiotic. That should greatly reduce the risk of getting a C. diff infection.

Antibiotics, of course, will not "cure" bronchitis - it will only help to eliminate any bacterial infection that might be involved. I'm concerned that this issue may be becoming a chronic problem for you. Have you or your doctor ever figured out why the bronchitis keeps coming back? It might be a good idea to ask your doctor what could be done to help prevent this from becoming a chronic problem. At your young age, I would really hate for you to end up with chronic bronchitis, and to have to deal with it for the rest of your life. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, (COPD), typically leads to permanent, and progressive obstruction of airflow to the lungs.

If you use the probiotics, (for at least a couple of weeks after the treatment ends), you should be OK with the augmentin treatment.

Good luck with this, and take care of yourself.

Tami,

Sorry to hear you are so sick. Does your doctor have any idea why you keep getting (or can't get rid of) the bronchitis? Do you have GERD? GERD can cause bronchitis and it seems like alot of people on this site have GERD. I believe GERD is caused by food intolerances alot of the time, so maybe you are still reacting to something - soy and legumes were a bad GERD trigger for me.

I think I'd be pressing him because repeated antibiotic use is a bit concerning. A few years back I started getting headaches all the time. My doctor kept telling me I had a sinus infection and gave me zithromax several times (I know now that my headaches were caused by dairy - I don't think I ever had a sinus infection and that's why the antibiotics didn't work). On about my 5th round of antibiotic I developed a rash and he said I could no longer take zithromax. Anyway, IMO when something doesn't clear up like expected it could be because they need to be treating the underlying cause, not just the symptom.

Hope you feel better soon.

Mary Beth
