GYN visit

Post by kscolorado »

Had that lovely annual check up done yesterday. All okay except she says I have fibrocystic breast changes and said it would be a good idea if I eliminate or drastically reduce caffeine. I have noticed more tenderness and aching in one side mid month but I usually blow it off to lifting something ect. I am a caffeine maniac during the summer with ice tea. I drink it all day long. Have any of you had experience or know someone else who eliminated caffeine and it helped? Decaf tea is just not the same!

I gave up caffeine in my late twenties for the same reason. Yes, it helped. I have however become very sensitive to caffeine, as a result. I get the shakes and the transit time of my gut increases if I "accidentally" have regular instead of decaf.

I can't taste a difference and I brew decaf tea in glass pitcher in the sun all summer long...

Yep, caffeine can be a trigger. I used to get alot of breast pain and when it would flare (premenstrually like yours) I would cut back on caffeine. A while back my GYN told me to use Evening Primrose Oil - I never did but I do beleive there have been some studies showing it can be effective with breast pain. Like with all supplements, you should check out current research to see if it's worthwhile. The best place to look for a compilation of research on supplement effectiveness is The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements website - they track research and report evidence of effectiveness.

Thanks Mary and Mary Beth. I did read about Evening Primrose oil and may try it if it continues to be painful. I I'm sure I will get used to decaf tea. I will always be a southern girl and love my iced tea

Kathy,

There seems to be a lot of difference in teas, and in how they are brewed. When I had to cut out all types of sugar for a year or so, (because it made me sick), I found that the tea that I had been drinking for years, tasted bitter and unpalatable, without sugar. After a bit of searching and experimenting, though, I found some that tasted great without sugar. I don't have a problem with sugar now, but I still prefer tea without sugar, (provided it is the right brand, and it's made right). Chances are, the same situation may exist with decaf teas.

I really don't like regular tea (such as Lipton) without a little sugar at least. However, I love Bigelow Herbal teas with fruit juice such as Tasty Tangerine or Pomegranate Pizzazz.

Delicious and refreshing without any sugar. If I can't find them locally, I order over the internet.

Hi Kathy,

Have that lovely little test coming up this Monday, so I'm glad you brought this up. I don't get all that much caffeine anymore like I used to, but I still can get sore from the little bit I do get with the fibrocystic. It's not bad now, but it wasn't comfortable getting the doc's digital exam recently, so I'm going to do a couple of things before Monday:

1) I'm going to try to wean off caffeine through this weekend, at least until immediately after the mammogram Monday. (Unfortunately, it's not until 2:15 PM!!)
2) I'm going to get myself on some Vitamin E up until the time of the test (even though I'm sensitive to soy!!!) as that will also make the test alot less uncomfortable.

Anyway, just thought I'd pass along those two little "helpful hints" to try before it's time for your next mammogram. By the way, should you turn out to be sensitive to soy, once you cut way back on your caffeine, you might be able to leave off the Vitamin E (with soy) on any kind of regular basis to avoid the pain or soreness, unless, of course, you need it leading up to the mammogram to make it less uncomfortable as I do.

I never come in contact with soy in my diet anymore, so I don't think I'll have much of a reaction over the weekend, if any. Some people may just be too sensitive to it to even attempt this. I hope you are not one of them.

Hope this helps.

Luce

Thanks for the tips! I do have to have a mammogram. They are supposed to call me this week to schedule. She was able to tell by the breast exam that I was fibrocystic. I started soy free on sunday so we will see how I respond. I will be thinking of you on Monday!

Kathy,

Would you believe it, I found some Vit E at Whole Foods that's extracted from fish, so NO soy is in it! It's made by Carlson's, a reputable company, and it's pretty expensive for a bottle, but not much more than anything else in the supplement department these days. I've not yet even opened up the outer box to take one, but I need to get started on those right away.

Anyway, I hope this is good timing for you as well!

Yours, Luce

Kathy,

Did you see my note (Luce's) about the Vit E that's made from fish, I guess. It's made by Carlson's which is the company that sells fish oils, etc. I think the company is supposed to have pretty high standards, and they are one of the reputable companies that Whole Foods sells.

These are gel caps, one of the few forms of anything that I can swallow very easily. I didn't get around to taking these until last evening with a meal, and then, again this morning with my brunch snack (not much of anything, really before the mammogram. It still wasn't comfortable, but I think all that I did to decrease the pain helped some. I really wish I'd started on that Vit E longer before the tests. (Also had an ultrasound.) Anyway, I told the radiologist about the soyless Vit E, but she can't take them herself due to their most likely being made from fish, being a vegetarian (she's from India). Maybe she'll still be able to tell someone else about it if they have a problem with soy.

Another thing I didn't mention in the earlier post was that I left off replacing my second estrodial patch until this evening as the hormone level influences the amount of discomfort as well. I've gone back to being more careful about delays of the dosage the rest of the year due to having osteoporosis pretty bad.
I'm trying to avoid any further bone loss so that I don't have to be put on medication for that, even though everyone, including the insurance company has been questioning why I'm not already one one of these. At least the worst area on the DEXA in the neck of my femor stayed the same this year, but the back has gotten worse as well as one other area. Hopefully, there will be zero difference in those two for the next DEXA exam, scheduled in two years this time, as well as in the femoral neck, so I won't have to go on medication then. I'm already at high risk for hip fracture, even without any further loss last year.

I've also started on the elliptical trainer. I think my radiologist was shocked that I'd actually done what I was supposed to for once! Ha! Walking would probably be better, but I've got a little tendonitis in one foot, so it's the next best thing for the ostoporosis, according to the orthopedist I saw for my foot recently. Probably need to add a few more specific exercises to target specific areas. I really need to learn alot more about these kinds of exercises to build bone. Orthopedist says that any exercise that causes the muscles to pull on bone are good for stimulating bone growth, so even swimming laps hard, despite what you hear, CAN be good for the bones. My endochriinologist says that it's difficult to stimulate bone growth, so I've got my work cut out for me.

Anyway, hope the non-soy Vit E is in a healthfood store near you if you need to be on it for the cystic fibrosis pain on a regular basis. I got the Carlson's brand -- probably the easiest to find as it's a well respected company, I think. Not cheap though.

Hope you mammogram went well with healthy results.

Thanks Luce I will definately check it out. You are an inspiration! I have problems with my left foot, haven't had it checked out since it only bothers me when I do extreme distance walking. It hurts on the top on the curve below my little toe, so I stick to walking a mile and a half a day on the tread mill. It seems to have happened after I fell on the ice two years ago getting fresh flowers for the restaurant and of course I was in too big of a hurry to get myself checked out. My elbow hurt for a month. I am terrible about taking time to go to doctors ect. Speaking of which, the doctor's office still hasn't called to schedule the mammogram. I am so busy right now so thats okay but will remind them soon. My youngest leaves for college on August 16th so getting organized for all of that plus trying not to think about my youngest leaving the nest, tourist time at both restaurants and trying not to upset my diet...yikes! I also have an appointment with a GI on August 6th so I am doing pretty good for a doctor shy girl!
