Did anyone watch NCIS last night? CC and GF were mentioned
So I was flipping through the channels last night and I came upon NCIS. I never watch the show, but two characters were talking. The one was taking some kind of medication and the other guy asks what he takes it for. He said "Collagenous Colitis", but that it will have to be diagnosed with an upper GI study??? Obviously wrong info there. Then he said that his Doctor said that he thinks he might have Celiac Disease and that he should cut down on all the gluten he eats. I also thought that was funny. Just thought I'd share w/others who would also find it funny :)

Interesting. I missed that show, of course, but it's very interesting that they would mention the disease. Apparently one of the show's writers, at least, must have heard of it. LOL.
Did you try the probiotic with Camryn?
Thanks for the post. It's always interesting, (and usually entertaining), to see how TV treats a disease such as CC.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
That is kind of funny.
The writer must have heard of it through a family member or a friend but obviously didn't pay much attention to more than the name.
A doctor says "cut down" on gluten for Celiac disease. Didn't pay much attention there either.

I was dx hypothyroid in college back in the dark ages. They used a geiger counter and radioactive iodine. The tech thought his machine was broken because I did not look as bad as his machine said I was. I probably was 5 pounds overweight.

I was getting extremely sick and scared, my thyroid was dangerously out of wack, my TSH was 98. I was having horrible abdominal pain, I was extremely constipated and had never been that way in my life. And I thought I was getting early altheizmers I couldn't remember anything and I was having other weird mental issues. And I was always freezing, my hands were like ice cubes. And my skin was so dry, nothing would help. I had just lost 80 pounds and I thought it had something to do with that. (I needed to lose the pounds it was intentional, the weight loss).JLH wrote:I was dx hypothyroid in college back in the dark ages. They used a geiger counter and radioactive iodine. I may be a hard-ass, but I rarely believe people who blame their weight on underactive thyroid, I think it is more a case of over-active mouth.
Wow, a geiger counter and radioactive iodine.

Deb,
I may have thought the thyroid wasn't that much of a factor until I had my thyroid removed. It was interesting because they put you on a higher dose than you need, then bring you back in, and put you on a lower dose than you need, and then adjust to somewhere in the middle with thyroid hormones til it's just right.
Anyway, I was always amazed when I got on the scale at how much my weight depended on the dosage of hormones I was getting during that regulating period. I have heard that some women, in particular, don't lose a pound, even after gradually lowering their calorie intake down to 500 cals a day.
My weight was slowly declining from the M.C. anyway, so I was constantly replacing my small wardrobe over those last few years before I took on the diet, but at that time, the general slow loss did not prevent me from seeing how the dosage of thyroid would quickly raise or lower my weight without any other change in my diet at all. Guess that made a believer out of me.
By the way, did you ever develop a goiter with your hypothyroid? Mine came up all of a sudden, and the thyroid was just no good anymore, so all of it had to go. We couldn't rule out a slight possibility of cancer, although thyroid cancer is rare as cancers go, and then, percentage wise, I think it usually responds well to therapy when it is cancer. People still die of thyroid cancer, however. A friend of my sister's died in the last couple of years of it, and she was only in her 50's -- maybe early 50's.
Well, on that unpleasant note, I need to close.
Yours, Luce

I used to feel the same way you do. I really hope it doesn't happen to you.

No I never had a goiter Luce.
I have fought my weight my entire life, I have lost 60 or 80 pounds so many times in my life I have lost count. The most weight I ever lost was when my thyroid quit working. It didn't seem to make any difference, all I know is if I eat too much I get fat, if I don't eat too much I lose weight.
I guess I just see too many people shoving doughnuts into their faces at work and then say they have a sluggish thyroid so that is why they are overweight.
It was most likey the prednisone Shirley.

In my case, perhaps as in Deb's, the thing that killed my thyroid was also causing me to malabsorb fats, so as this autoimmune syndrome was making me lose weight, it was also causing my thyroid to loose it's ability to produce the thyroid hormones. I think that if my thyroid hadn't been so sluggish, that I would've lost weight fast instead of slowly. I was drinking more cokes in order to retain any calories at all, so that helped to offset the fat loss and therefore, weight loss.
How ya like that theory?

Sounds like a good theory to me Luce.
And Joan, I have read that around menopause is when alot of women start having thyroid problems too, I think every woman should get their thyroid checked as part of a general health screening. I was like a text book case for hypothroidism.
I wish MC was as easy to control, one small pill a day, and no side effects.
