I sure wish I could tolerate some of those fruits on your list, Mary Beth. I hope it works for others. I notice immediate gurgling if I eat any of those and later gas and bloating and sometimes pain.

P.S. Ant, yes getting energy is a problem. My dietician recommended fats. So I pour on the olive oil. It helps.

Mary Beth,

The FODMAP diet appears to correlate fairly closely with the foods that history has shown that most of us can tolerate, with a few noted exceptions, as you mentioned, particularly lettuce, and for some of us, tomatoes. I'm kind of surprised to see bell peppers on the acceptable list, though. I know of several people in my local circle of friends and relatives, who can't tolerate bell peppers, (and none of them will admit to any digestive system issues, otherwise). They can handle chili peppers just fine, but not bell peppers, strangely enough. As you say though, there are always individual exceptions.

It sounds as though your recovery is right on track.

I hope that continues to be the case.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Well, I guess I need to put in my 2 cents here. I have had the breath tests for fructose and SIBO. They really are very simple tests that even a child could administer and read the results. They are given almost identically. The only difference is the liquid that you drink prior to the test. Fructose or lactulose. I had them two years ago and what I remember is that you drink a cup full of the liquid and then wait about 30 minutes and then the tech has you take a very deep breath and blow into a small device until you cannot blow anymore. A digital number is displayed on the device and the tech writes that number down. This is repeated every 20 - 30 minutes for about 3 hours. The number just has to go above 20 to be positive. My fructose number went up to 113, if my memory serves me right. I did not have a positive response to the SIBO test. The tests have to be administered on different days at least 3 days apart. It took 3 days to get the fructose out of my system. (They told me it would). I was so sick during that test. It made me very nauseous and I had D at least 3 times during the test. The tech wrote that info down on the result sheet. Just FYI.

All the fructose intolerance info that I have read is very contradicting. First you have to detect whether they are talking about hereditary fructose intolerance or dietary fructose intolerance ( some now call it fructose malabsorption). But even when you decide that and hone in on just DFI which is what I have since I have not had this since birth, the info is not clear. Just when I think I understand it I read something else and that bit of info says just the opposite. I lurk on the HFI support board and even they are all different to a degree on what they can tolerate. The doctors are clueless. After my testing I was handed copies of different articles from the internet including articles about HFI. My next GI said they were "working on their information about DFI" and couldn't give me anything. I have talked with 2 different dieticians about this. One just wanted me to take anti anxiety drugs and the other tried to offer advice but it seems they are clueless also. I have read Sue Shepherd's book about FODMAPS and it allows a great amount of sugar that I just cannot tolerate. And most of the foods she talks about are packaged foods that are sold in Australia where she is from. It is interesting to see the pictures of the different packages and products they have.

Well, reading back over this I guess I just needed to vent. Thanks for listening.
