Glutened...grrr

Post by kscolorado »

Yesterday I went to a cousins house and she served taco salad for lunch. She showed me everything that went into the salad and it looked okay except whey powder in the taco seasonings but I thought won't be that much and I've been eating cheese with no problem now. Felt fine after we left and went to Carabba's restaurant. I ordered from the gluten free menu and said I needed to be soy and gluten free. I ate all the chicken soup but after the entree arrived, I could only eat two bites because my stomach was hurting. I belched loudly all the way home (about a 20 minute drive) then the nasty gas farts came when I was home. I didn't get the D until after 2:00 in the morning but kept getting up to go until almost 5 a.m. Hubby let me stay in bed (taking care of our shelties) so I didn't get up till 10:00. Do you guys think I was glutened by salad or carabba's. I haven't been glutened this bad in months...going to the bears vs. bronco's today so hoping I will be able to have fun!

Did your cousin use already shredded cheese from a package for the tacos? Those are often dusted with flour to prevent the shredded cheese from sticking together.

Hope you finished with the side effects and can enjoy the game!

Good thinking about the cheese.......... was there MSG (monosodium glutamate) in the taco seasoning or natural flavorings? Some kind of soy? I've had a package of Taco Bell Taco Seasoning in my cupboard for at least 2 years now. It contains both MSG and soy plus wheat flour. I just happened to think of it when I read your post. Guess now is a good time to put it in the garbage.

Hope you are able to enjoy the game.

Thanks Rosie and Shirley, the taco seasonings is a good bet. I have to be more vocal about saying that I am going to bring my own food instead of worrying that I will hurt someones feelings who is trying to cook gluten free for me. I feel okay but tired and getting ready to head to Denver to tail gait. Its an hour and 15 minute drive so I will try to nap on the way up. My husband will do the grilling so I am not worried.

I almost got glutened at a family bbq yesterday. My sister-in-law was trying hard to have gluten-free options, because not only me, but two other relatives have recently found out they are gluten-sensitive. They are not blood relatives, and we all got to talking about how much more recognized this sort of problem is becoming. My sister-in-law meant well, and had made up a bunch of hamburgers to grill. :grilling: I wanted to find out the ingredients, because there were obviously some onions and added seasoning. She told me they were gluten-free, just onions, eggs and a terriaki sauce. Woops! I asked to check the sauce bottle, and sure enough it contained the regular soy with wheat. She was really upset with herself because she had made a big effort to be gluten free and now the main event had gluten. It's really hard for those who haven't had to struggle with eliminating gluten to know where all the hidden landmines are!

Kathy,

Unless you know your typical "gluten transit time", it could be either the taco sauce, or the soup. The soup is a possibility only because liquids can go right through the stomach, so they can begin to trigger a reaction much more quickly than solid foods. Typical transit times for gluten seem to range from 6 to 12 hours, but one or two members say that 24 to 30 hours is standard for them.

Was the soup actually on the GF menu? One would think that if it was, it should have been safe, unless someone really made a blunder.

The salad itself would have done it for me - lettuce would turn me practically inside out, back before my gut healed.

Good luck at the game,
Tex

I never trust soup in a restaurant. There are too many ingredients on my intolerance list that could be lurking in it, even if it's gluten-free, though your list looks like it could be OK.

That said, I did the same thing on Friday when I visited a friend. I told her not to bother making me lunch - I would bring my own. Nonetheless, she made a lettuce-fruit salad and with a GF dressing. I felt bad that she went through the trouble to make something she thought I could eat. I had some and waited for the consequences. I was surprised that I didn't have D the next day, especially since the dressing had egg yolk in it. But I'm still taking one Entocort pill a day and that may have subdued my reaction.

It's always tricky when well-meaning friends try to make meals for us.

That is so true. It is easier to go to a restaurant and play hard with the staff. But when it is a relative or friend showing love, what to say? And asking to look at packs can seem rude.

Bye the way I have just relapsed to a D after a pretty good week. I think it might have been beetroot. Anyone have intolerance to beetroot?

Ant, sorry you had a relapse. Don't know much about beetroot though hopefully others can guide you. Hope you feel better soon!

Gloria and Rosie, you are so right about well meaning relatives and friends you dont want to hurt their feelings but after the other night I am willing to be stronger on this issue, just not worth the pain.

Tex, I am still thinking the salad because the soup would have been only a 15 minute time lapse or I guess it could have added to it. The game was fun, luckily my husband made my burger first before making other things. A friend not knowing any better put his bun on the grill to crisp it up...this was after I was already eating mine but we do now have to clean the grill more thoroughly. It makes me realize just how harder my eating life is but it could be worse so I will stop complaining!
