Prayers Please

Post by kate_ce1995 »

I know many of you are strong believers in the power of prayer. My grandmother could use them. She had a stroke yesterday. I don't even know what to pray for...she is 91 and is an incredible woman. Hiking has been her passion...she completed the Appalachian Trail over 2 summers...the ones in which she turned 70 and 71. She has climbed the 100 highest peaks in New England (and then some). She is paralyzed on her left side. I know how hard it will be for her to live if she can't walk. She's the incredibly strong type, so even though I've know "she's over 90 and her day could come" getting the call from my dad yesterday was tough. She isn't the type you expect to get sick.

Thanks, Katy

Katy,

I'm so sorry to read about your grandmother. IMHO, strokes are one of the cruelest maladies that can happen - I don't think age matters. One day a person can be perfectly healthy and be up and about, and the next day, they've lost the ability to talk or to walk. My heart goes out to you and your family. I hope your grandmother can be rehabilitated and regain some of her walking ability.

Oh the poor lady. She has had a wonderful, full, active life, it is one reason she is 91 I suspect. I hope she pulls through and can take a few more walks, she sounds like a strong lady.

My best to her and you and the rest of your family.

Hi Katy,

Sure thing - prayers are on the way. I hope she realizes that she may be able to overcome this, at least to some extent, if she stays strong, and doesn't just "give up".

I'm certainly sending my best wishes, too.

Dear Katy,

She sounds like quite a lady, and I pray for a good recovery.

Thanks guys,

The update this morning from my Dad is that the doctor said she "wasn't a candidate for this". Her cholesterol numbers were awesome...I guess her HDL was 93! The doctor said he walks a lot (which helps the HDL go up) and his is between 50 and 60...most of us are in the 30's. It was a right side brain stroke, so fortunately she can talk, and is recognizing everyone and has throughout. Only time will tell how much other cognitive fuction she might have lost if any. She starts OT this morning.

I sure hope the rehab is a success for her, Kate. As Tex said (more or less), I hope she can keep a positive outlook and not be defeated by this thing.

My prayers are with your grandmother and your family. You have to admire those strong New Englanders. She has had a wonderful life and I hope the OT gets her back to normalcy and she can enjoy another hike.

Love, Maggie
