Nerve conduction test

Post by JLH »

Finally, after nearly a year of complaining about weird sensations in my toes and some cramping, too, my doctor sent me to a neurologist. (Maybe, mentioning peripheral neuropathy did it.)

I was doing so much better when I went to see him. I had misplaced the bottle of my statin drug. The test was not my idea of fun. I had no idea.......

He said the test was fine. I asked him if my statin drug could be causing my problems. He said yes and that I should get off of them! I said my doctor had wanted to double them and I just said NO.

I want off (and stopped the Pravastatin) and made an appointment to tell my doctor so. I think statins may have caused some of my hair loss.

It's always something..........

Hi Joan,
I looked up statins and hair loss. There are several web sites that confirm your suspicions and Phizer has actually admitted it. My husband has been on statins for several years. He has numerous problems with his feet and has had two cortizone shots for pain in a nerve at the top of his foot. He also has leg cramps. He has a 70% narrowing in one artery in his heart and family history of heart disease. His heart doctor recommends salmon oil and niacin supplements with the statin. I am hoping the diet I am now on for MC helps him too.

Tex said it best when he said that we have to consider the side effects versus the good effects of medication.

I hope you will find the best answer for you. I know the hair loss is a difficult one as I am struggling too.
Thinking of you. Connie

Joan,

I'm glad to hear that they found the cause. I have tried every statin and get terrible muscle myalgia but since nothing showed on the CK test (for muscle problems) they kept pushing them. I have an appointment with my cardiologist (the biggest pusher) and she is just going to have to understand that I'm not taking them. I eat what I can (raw and al dente veggies are out) and keep as much fat out as I can and if my cholesteral is up - so be it.

Good luck with your appointment (and with your trip to Cleveland).

Thank you for posting about this. I have noticed my hair doesn't seem as "thick" as it used to be. Been blaming it on the Asacol but a contributor could be the statin my doc. insisted I take although most of the time I was only taking 3 to 4 a week (I was supposed to take one a day, of course). I think I'll drop them entirely now.

My Mom has extremely thin hair and I don't want to end up that way if I can help it

I'm sure heredity, aging and other factors are also involved in my hair loss.

My Mom had a quadruple bypass and my Dad had a pacemaker.........

Talk with your doctor. I don't want to be responsible for any medical problems.

 HaHa Don't worry about being responsible for my health. I know it's my decision. I didn't want to take the drug in the first place and resisted for about a year before caving in about it. The hair loss is just another brick for my "wall".

I hope you are still doing much better off the statin.
