Fish sensitivity?

Post by Rosie »

I'm beginning to wonder if I have some sort of sensitivity to fish/fish oil. I've noticed that each time I've had an oily fish like tuna or salmon I get the "gurgles" and have looser stools. At first I attributed it to getting soy with it, especially the canned tuna. But yesterday I had some "premium" tuna with the only added items being olive oil and sea salt, and had the same old problems. Also, something in the supplements I was taking put me into my original flare back in may because I got much better after eliminating them. I was taking fish oil capsules twice a day then, but thought it might be soy in the fish oil that was the culprit, not the fish oil itself.

Has anyone else noticed a problem with fish? I don't remember reading anything about it, and it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. Is it just coincidence? Or perhaps just one of those foods that bother me now because my gut is still healing, but that will be OK later?

Hi,

I can't tolerate fish oil or fish, but I don't get D. Can't remember the reaction to fish oil. I get itchy if I eat fish. Probably a histamine reaction.

Hi Rosie!

It just might be the oil that gives you D. Any kind of oil in a large enough amount will act like a laxative. (Sometimes we recommend good old mineral oil for kids with constipation). It may be that since these are 2 of the fattiest fish (not to mention the added olive oil and/or fish oil capsules), you are "lubricating" your GI tract beyond what it can handle just now.

Love,

I also cannot tolerate fish due to histamine. My reactions do involve D along with a bunch of other symptoms.

Polly, thanks for your common sense reply. Sometimes we try to "overthink" our digestive problems.

Faith and Mary Beth, I didn't realize that fish was a problem for those with mast cell issues!

Angy, I'll try the tuna without olive oil and see if that makes a difference.

Dear Rosie

I too am beginning to think I may have a problem with fish. My last flare may have been triggered by kippers, smoked mackerel and smoked salmon. The smoking may have been the problem, but maybe it was the oiliness (or whatever?) of the fish. I stopped eating smoked fish about three weeks ago. Since then I have eaten ordinary grilled fish a couple of times and noticed a slight reaction in the gut (even while on Pepto and Entocort).

So fish is now on my suspect list.

All best Ant
