Problems
What a trip this has been!
On Sunday, my daughter was leaning against a door frame to put her shoes on and her 21-month old daughter slammed the door, nearly severing the top 1/2" of my daughter's pinky finger. DD's husband wasn't home; he was on a fishing guide trip about an hour away. We packed the finger in ice and rushed to the brand new hospital, only to find that it would open the next day. I drove her to another hospital which was about 2 miles away. That hospital wouldn't let me stay in the waiting room because of the children and the swine flu.
My daughter had to answer all the questions and check herself in. I took the children to the nursery at their church and decided to stay there with them because they were pretty rattled. The 4-year-old said she thought she might have to get a new mommy. Being at church seemed to take their mind off the crisis and in time, my SIL made it to the hospital to be with DD. Her finger tip has been reattached and she will hopefully be able to keep it. She's in a lot of pain, but has been taking pain medication. She's been very grateful to have me here and we both wish I weren't leaving tomorrow. I don't know how she's going to be able to change the 21-month old's diapers or put her in her crib. She returned to her teaching job today and I'm hoping it goes well.
My issues sure seem trivial by comparison, but I've had a recurrance of D since I came here. It started shortly after I arrived on Friday, so it's not all related to the stress. I haven't eaten out, and I've been cooking my own meals with the food I brought. I'm drinking 2-3 cups of Almond Dream a day as opposed to 1 cup spread over two meals at home. They have a water softener and I don't. This is the first time since I've had MC that they've actually added pellets. The third difference is that I'm not taking my statin. My refill hadn't arrived before I left home. I'm perplexed and discouraged of course. I haven't eaten any fruit, either. Will this ever end?

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Dear Gloria
What a terrible ordeal. I hope your daughter's finger soon heals and her pain stops. Also sorry to hear that your D returned. I know the emotion.... "will this ever end?"..... and you have been at it for longer than me. I think it will. I have faith that medical understanding is advancing, even if at a slower pace than we would like, and diet treatment will eventually calm our immune system.....
All the very best, Ant

How awful. Your daughter was lucky you happened to be there when the accident happened. Hopefully she will keep her finger tip, and recover soon. The healing will take a while, and she'll have to be real careful not to get the bandage wet, protect against contamination and infection, and not be bumping it. It will be a real challencge dealing with her kids who are too young to really understand what went on and why their Mom isn't acting like she usually does.
And then you got added D. I'm sure it makes it much harder to deal with your daughter's accident, wondering if the dreaded D will strike at a bad time. Let's hope that when you return home to your ususal routine, your gut will decide to go back to normal too. We can go nuts trying to figure out what might be causing a flare with all the possible variables........
Take care,
Rosie

Sorry that you are having problems Gloria and what an ordeal with your DD! Can't think of what could be causing the D except sometimes just traveling can cause that for me. The increase in Almond milk is a possibility since your body is used to a smaller amount? Hope it lets up for you so you can enjoy the remainder of the trip!

Hi Gloria,
Sorry to hear about all the problems. Hopefully, your daughter's finger will heal quickly, and without any complications.
Remember that Rice Dream contains up to 20 ppm of gluten. I would assume that those ratings are based on a "normal", (IOW), labeled serving size. For most products, that's not very much, and we tend to use more of it than what the manufacturer chooses to call a regular serving. Manufacturers generally shoot low, because the smaller the serving size, the lower the calorie rating, so most labels understate what an average individual is likely to eat or drink. Doubling or tripling the serving size, will double or triple the gluten "dose", obviously. I'm not saying that this is necessarily the problem, but you might want to consider it as a possibility.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Gloria~~~~~ what a horrible accident---and I am sure it will mend just fine!!!
I also know that STRESS can erupt a day or two after U go thru a very frightening issue!!!
I hope your statins arrive soon and if not maybe your GI can call into your drugstore for a bit of a holdover till the full prescription arrives
I have had that occur with me-----
Hope your D feels better---and she also will have to work very gently in taking care of the baby-

Hi Gloria,
It is very hard for me to tell what is effecting me sometimes so take this for what it is worth , but I swear water softeners cause me problems. We have a cabin that we installed a water softener in and I got sick even though I was eating the same food as always. My husband said I was nuts but after the third time it made me sick I had him divert the softener so it wasn't coming into the drinking water and I haven't had a problem since. Maybe try getting a couple jugs of bottled water to see if it helps. It's the pits to not feel well when you are away from home. I hope it turns around soon for you.
Love,
Cristi

Gloria,
How terrible about your daughter's finger - not to mention the reaction of the children. I hope they all recover soon.
Hopefully when you get home things will turn around again - sounds like it could be the milk or the softener. I know how you feel when you don't know the trigger.
Take care,
Mary Beth

Gloria--
So sorry for the situation right now. Ugh...what a traumatic accident that must have been for you all. I pray that your daughter's finger heals well, and that the kids have confidence that mom will be 'good as new' in time. I'm glad you're there for them.
Hate that your MC is acting up too, right now! You don't need that! You mention some good possibilities. Sounds like the milk or water softener could be the problem?? Also, I do think that sometimes its just a willy-nilly flare that we can't figure out... Just my .02
Wishing you a calm GI system! And peace in your daughter's house.
