My son is having a flare up

Post by mbeezie »

My son, now 10, went GF/DF after Enterolab testing. He's DQ 2,1 so I don't know if he was truly celiac - bad mommy, I know. I've beaten myself up many times for not getting him tested. He responded great to the diet and his C and eczema cleared up.

He's now having some sort of flare-up. He's had some D and some accidents in the last few weeks. Last night he showed me an apthous ulcer that he's had a few weeks. Pretty sure he's not cheating (although we had some suspicious tamales over the holiday). He gets minimal soy since I avoid it, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

I'm going to do MRT on him today and make a Pedi GI appt. I hate to think that he has even more food intolerances. This has been hard enough for him!! It's one thing to go through this as an adult, but far worse as a child. I am so worried he'll have an accident at school and now even more concerned about what's going on.

So sorry to hear that news, Mary Beth. I hope you find the answer very soon. It's got to be really rough on children...it's tough enough on this adult.

Gheeeze, I so much agree with you, this is hard enough for an adult let alone a child. Lets hope the pediatric GI is enlightened. But he does have an extremely knowledgeable mum.

Wishing all the best for your son, Ant

Poor wee fella!!! Hope the docs get him on track. Has he been cheating with foods? Maybe he doesn't realisehow serious this could get. It would definately be hard for a 10 year old to shift to a totaly gf diet.. God it's difficult for us adults never mind our little angels..give him a wee hug from me...

Thanks for your thoughts. He was very brave getting a blood test (his first one) and his pedi ordered a referral. I'm guessing it will take a while to get in with the GI.

It makes me wonder if there's something in your environment that you both might be reacting to. Hope you find a solution soon.

I got my son's MRT results back and he was highly reative to corn, so I was right about the tamales. I know he can eat small amounts of corn without trouble but we are now going corn free (as best we can - corn is EVERYWHERE).

He was reactive to some high fructose fruits (apples and pears, which we eat alot of this time of year) as well, so that may have contributed to his accidents.

I am now putting him on the LEAP program (the 6 phase diet that goes along with MRT) to calm his immune system. I believe he will heal quickly. He has been off gluten, dairy and very minimal amounts of soy for 9 months and has done great except for this recent flare-up. I am going to totally eliminate soy as well for now. I am hopeful that once he heals he may be able to eat some corn and maybe even some dairy. He would probably burst with joy if he could eat some cheese and milk chocolate.
