question on calcium/vit d intake
till Sunday I took a calcium/vit D pill with a meal. Since Sunday I changed it and take maximum doses now just before I go to sleep. Since than, I have gut problems. It is difficult to distinguish if it is the stomach, small or large bowel. It's kind a cramping not extremely painful, but keeps me awake during night. My stools are normal.
I have an idea what it could be (but not sure) Vit D/calcium pills irritate the stomach/bowel, especially when you take them on an empty or almost empty stomach.
I noticed the same with Budenofalk, I take one pill before breakfast. When I wait to long to eat I get stomach cramping. Took me a while to figure that was causing the problem, time in between taking the pill and eating.
I also read something about the difference in bowel/stomach problems between different calcium supplement, calciumcitrate should give less troubles than calciumcarbonate (because of the carbonate). Anybody any experience with this?

Harma,
I had always been told to take my calcium and Vit D with food. They said I would have better absorption than if I took it without anything. Also, I was told to take no more than 600 mg of calcium at a time. Anything more and your body won't take it. So, I take one with breakfast and one with dinner.
Hope this helps you.

And I forgot, I just did some reading on internet on Vit D. One thing got my attention. Vit d deficiency can be caused by fat malabsorption. That was an aha moment for me. Could that than maybe the cause of my osteoporoses (the beginning of it). As far as I know the last years I took enough calcium and vit d, partly as food partly is supplements. I had never heard of calcium malabsorption and also didn't read anything about it. And all the other levels in my blood of nutrients were okay/normal.
Enterolab testing showed a high score on fat malabsorption. So that could be the link.
Probably somebody else here did come up with this before or maybe there is a whole topic about it.

Harma,
Yes, most vitamins are fat soluble, so if you have a fat malabsorption problem, your body does not absorb them very well, and the result is osteoporosis, (or osteopenia). Your fecal fat score at Enterolab was 578, so you obviously had a significant amount of damage to your small intestine, and therefore, a significant malabsorption problem.
Like Jan, I always take my vitamins, (and medications), with a meal, or immediately afterward, (IOW, I never take them on an empty stomach).

Interesting.
I take 2 calcium (Caltrate) tablets with my evening meal. I take zinc with my breakfast as I understood that zinc and calcium interfered (I think the zinc stops the calcium absorbing, but it could be the other way around).
If we don't absorb more than 600mg of calcium at a time, I am going to have to take one tablet with lunch and one at dinner. That is always really difficult to remember because I don't have a routine to remind me like I do for breakfast and dinner, and I am usually out of the house so have to remember to take them etc. Oh dear, that would be hard.
Never noticed a difference whether I take calcium in morning or at night, but I always take it with food as was told calcium carbonate is just not absorbed properly without food.

Zinc makes me nauseous if I take too much of it at a time, or if my tum's not reallllly cushioned with food.
Problem is that I don't typically eat alot of food at one time, so if i miss taking something after our evening meal, may as well not take anything, and try again next day.
Good luck. Good information posted. Thanks!
