Hi everyone - first of all I want to send Tex some get well wishes!!! I hope you are feeling better :)
Camryn has been doing really great for a while, but the D has come back in the last two weeks (not all the time, but at least once a day). My son is also having some D, so I'm wondering if they have a stomach bug. We know she hasn't gotten anything that had gluten in it...and we took some extra precautions (like getting her own GF toaster oven). Any ideas on how to determine the difference between MC D and Stomach Flu D?
She goes back to her Dr. at CHOP (hasn't seen her in 9 months) next week for a check up. I'm not sure what to tell her. I'm worried she'll want to do a colonoscopy again if I tell her the D returned despite the GF/chocolate/citrus free diet.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Laura

I agree with Lyn - not being gross (then again the reality is it is part of our daily routine i am sure) if the motions are the same (colour / texture / smell)
I am guessing (and Polly and others may be far more knowlegeable, ) if a mc sufferer was to get a stomach bug, recovery could take longer than a non MC person.
i can imagine doing the colonscopy on a 3 year old is traumatic (more so for you than Camryn), if the GI is doing the biopsies correctly and you get the results about inflamation levels then it may give you insight if the diet is helping/working.
hope they both recover soon and good luck for the Dr's visit

Their D is similar, but hers is part solid/part thick brown water (sorry for the TMI). His is more of the thick brown water. He has never had any gluten issues. She is potty trained and she has had a lot of #2 accidents lately...everytime it was D.
She turns 4 next month. She is supposed to start preschool in September. I'm a little worried about her LC and how it will be handled at the preschool. I think they will be good about making sure she doesn't eat gluten (actually she is pretty good at monitoring that herself...if someone tries to give her a cookie she says "no, that has gluten and I can't eat it"). But, I'm worried about how they will respond if she gets D all the time. They don't change diapers at that preschool...if she has an accident, she needs to be picked up.

Hi Laura,
Good to "see" you again - I was wondering how Camryn is doing. Sorry to hear about the continuing diarrhea.
The fact that both kids are having some D could point to an infectious cause. Two weeks does seem a little long for the D, but sometimes a GI virus knocks out enzyme and other systems that may take a while to recover. Something else that could affect both of them is the presence of O and P (ova and parasites, also known as "worms"). Don't mean to gross you out, but worms are very common in kids and very contagious. A simple stool lab test can rule this out. Have the kids been on any antibiotics recently? More than 20% who take amoxicillin, for example, get D.
Another thought is that she may be developing additional intolerances. This has happened to many of us. (I can't remember, did she have Dr. Fine's food intolerance tests?) If this is the case, the next most likely intolerance based upon our experience here would be dairy (followed by soy). Has your son been tested for intolerances?
It's good that you have a followup appt. scheduled. You know, if you do not want another colonoscopy, you can certainly refuse it at this time. Easy for me to say, since I have never seen Camryn's medical records or examined her............but unless the doc can give you a very good reason for repeating it so soon, you may want to say no. It would not be a good enough reason for me if they said they just wanted to followup her progress, especially if the test would have no impact on any recommended treatment. The usual colonoscopy schedule for those with MC seems to be every 5 years, but more frequently if something other than MC is present (ulcers, bleeding, polyps).
Please update us on the appt.
Love,
Polly
