an other interesting thing, the difference between high and low German, as far as I know their is only one official German language. The language where books, novels, magazines and newspapers are written in, what they use in schools and universities. For sure there will be many dialects. I am not that far from the German border, about 30 - 45 minutes drive. Understanding German goes quite well, but speaking is a nightmare. Dutch and German are very similar in grammar and how to build up sentence, only one difference German has the "Namable" and that was (at least for me) so difficult to learn. English has only the for nouns, German has der (male) die (female) and das (neutral) , and for each member word than 4 different forms (die Namable), so that is 12 different member words in total and a lot of rules when to use which one. Also strong and weak verbs with with rules, with exceptions and rules for this exceptions, with new exceptions and rules, going on for ever
I only had one year in high school and quitted it a soon as I could. And it is stupid that they taught it to us in this way, because for Dutch natives if there is any foreign language easy to learn if you don't worry about the grammar to much it is German.

Harma,
That's the only "official" version that I was aware of, too. I just assumed that the version spoken by descendants of German immigrants here in Texas, was a colloquial "Texanized" version. I agree with you - when I was trying to learn the basics of the language, I spent about 95% of my time, studying the declension of the verbs. Once I got that down, the rest seemed pretty straightforward, (except for the part about stringing words together until they're half a mile long. LOL). I never learned to speak German, but I could translate text well enough to pass the foreign language requirements.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
