No Wonder I Like It Here - My Area Is Number 13 On The List
Hi All,
Maybe where we live determines our happiness/outlook on life. How does your area rate?

It was a toss up for Florida between Port St. Lucie -104 and Palm Bay/Melbourne - 79.
Maybe that explains why I'm happier in Pa. (I don't really think so but *shrug*)

That's interesting, Tex. Eugene comes in at #27, but that's probably only if the survey was done in the summer. The winters tend to be wet, foggy and dreary. The sun finally came out yesterday after a week where the fog never lifted. Everything outside was coated with moisture, and there was an ever-present dank, dark, chill that was quite oppressive. Give me cold and snow anytime! But maybe not....those folks back east hammered with all the snow would probably beg to differ. At least I didn't have a mountain of snow to shovel and didn't have to negotiate slippery roads. I guess it's human nature to complain about your own weather.......
And my computer was down since yesterday morning with a virus that I couldn't deal with. It was one of those ironic "faux virus protection" viruses. The virus loads a new program onto the computer that tells you that your computer is infected with multiple viruses, and that you should go to their web site to get protection from the infestation. Of course in order to get the program you have to sign up and put in your credit card #......... The faux program even had a window up showing that it was doing a scan and picking up dozens of scary-sounding viruses. I've seen this before, but this one was a new and nastier version. It actually seized control of my computer and wouldn't let me open any files. It also took over the control panel so that I couldn't go in and unistall the program. The only thing it would let me do was hook up to the internet. It is designed to make someone panic and not think about what is going on. I use the AVG virus protection program, and it wasn't able to get rid of it. When I activated the AVG program and told it to scan now (as opposed to the scheduled daily scan in the middle of the night), a window popped up from them telling me to reboot my computer, and if that didn't work, to uninstall the program, which of course I couldn't do. So at this point, I had done all I could do, and phoned my trusty "Rent-A-Nerd" computer expert. Getting rid of these viruses makes up a fair percentage of his business. I posting this here just in case others encounter it, as it was new to me in that it hijacks my computer rather than just occasionally popping up a window saying that I'm infected with a virus. To make matters worse, when my husband got home he told me that he needed to use my computer because his laptop had developed the dreaded "blue screen", and the IT folks at the university hadn't fixed it yet. And I had planned to use HIS laptop to check my email....... Oh well, at least I'm fixed now.

Rosie,
We've had a lot of foggy, drizzly weather, here, too, this season - much more than usual. Several times it has turned into frozen fog, which is normally pretty rare, around here.
That sounds like a nasty little virus. I hope it doesn't become popular, and turn into an epidemic.
I'm glad you were able to get rid of it without having to restore everything.

The exact same thing happened with my computer a couple of weeks ago, Rosie. It is a really nasty one. My son-in-law had to wipe everything and reload.Rosie wrote: The faux program even had a window up showing that it was doing a scan and picking up dozens of scary-sounding viruses. I had told my son about it and the virus found his computer the following week. As soon as the window popped up he shut his computer down entirely. Waited a while and restarted in safe mode. Apparently that didn't give the virus a chance to make any inroads. It was OK. In my case, I knew I hadn't been to any sites other than my normal ones and I'm sure it didn't come through and e-mail attachment. I don't know how it gets around. Sure is frustrating though.

Tex,
Interesting. I'm like Shirley - I guess I fall between 2 areas -DC/Arlington/Alexandria at #8 and Lancaster, PA at #17.
Rosie!
Did you know that our beloved founder of this original website, Sally Read, lived in Eugene for many years? She LOVED it and shared many local photos with us of craft shows, farmer's markets, etc. After her mom died she moved to another area in OR but always wanted to go back to Eugene.
Shirley,
How many "sleeps" (as Peg would say) until you can get back to PA? Since I am only one state below PA, we reall MUST meet somewhere in between for lunch one day when you return.
Love,
Polly

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.
Polly, I did discover that Shirley had lived in Eugene for a while! It's a very interesting town......it's where all the old hippies from the 60's have come to retire. You sure see a lot of old, decorated VW buses around. The Saturday Market features a lot of their crafts. Then every summer is the Oregon Country Fair, a big hippie gathering. There are lots of stalls selling crafts, entertainment and the smell of weed is strong in the air....... Also, lots of topless women with interesting body paint add to the occasion, although aging hippies and toplessness don't always go well together.
The town kind of grabs you, as people care passionately about various issues. I very much enjoy living here! I'm an Oregon native, having grown up near Salem. I've moved a lot around the country since then, and returned to Oregon about 15 years ago.
Shirley, I'm sorry to hear that your computer suffered the same problem! Evidently this virus has been making the rounds. I don't know where I picked it up, except that it showed up while surfing the web. The "Rent-A-Nerd" that I use told me that most people get them from a pop-up that they then either accidently mouse over or click on the x box to get rid of. So he blocked the pop-up capability of my browser in order to minimize the chances of this happening again. Also, he has a program that he uses to find and get rid of viruses without having to wipe everything and reload. That's such an annoyance that I would rather pay the $67 than try to do it myself. I know just enough about computers to get myself in real trouble!

Hi Rosie,
I'd have gladly paid 67 to have my computer fixed but I didn't know anywhere that I could get it done that cheap and I thought Todd might be able to save at least some of the info but he couldn't. Since he is my son-in-law he is free so I can't complain. At least I got it back and it works. I didn't have anything life altering on it.
Hi Polly,
Well, it's about 50 "sleeps" before I go back for the summer. Then I have to come back here and get the last 2 crowns on the implants they put in a while ago. After that I can move back whenever I choose which will probably be in November. Might as well jump into winter with both feet. HaHa
In Pa, I'm located right on the border of Pa and NY about halfway between Binghamton and Elmira. If we can work it out, I'd love to get together with you. I really can't leave Mom overnight or anything but if we could meet somewhere in between I could probably work that out.
