Now I must enter this conversation with a little defense of dear ol Cockney rhyming (East London) slang.

"Dog and bone" = telephone
"Brahms and List" = pist (drunk)
"Adam and Eve" = believe
"Aristotle" = bottle
"Artful Dodger" = lodger
"Bob Hope" = soap
"Bricks and Mortar" = daughter
"Bread and Honey" = money
"Bristol City" = titty
"China Plate" = mate (as in "me ol china plate")
"Gregory Peck" = cheque
"Oily Rag" = fag (cigarette)
"Plates of Meat" = feet
"Pony and Trap" = crap (poo to you and me!)
"Porky Pies" = lies
"Tea Leaf" = thief
"Trouble and strife" = wife
"Vera Lynn" = gin

I was born in London, two of my grandparents were born in Australia and their daughter (my mother) was born in New York. We do all have a common, yet diverse, living language and it is certainly fun to try and keep it all alive!

All best, Ant

Somewhere, I have a book of Cockney slang that I got on my trip to London with my sister. She lived there for a year and a half a long time ago. She was a wonderful tour guide and could get us around on the tube easily. We still have some relatives there.
