Yep, it's true - numerous studies show that people who are classified as overweight, according to BMI, (Body Mass Index), ratings, actually tend to live longer, as a group, than people who have an "ideal" BMI. The effect seems to be particularly pronounced for older individuals.
So why are we constantly bombarded by propaganda claiming that lower BMIs are healthier? Beats the heck out of me. I reckon it just goes to show that it's not a good idea to blindly trust do-gooders who are always trying to protect us from ourselves.

Just came back from visiting my older brother in Cheyenne where he just went through a triple bypass surgery with 95% blockage in all arteries .
He is well over 400 pounds . Never exercises. His idea of a green salad is three kinds of green jello with artificial sweetener. He has never met a triple cheese burger and double fries that he did not inhale or deep fried crispy chicken where he ate the entire bucket by himself.
All went well but I feel he is lucky to be alive. His cardiologist was horrified and got him into surgery hoping that he would not have a heart attack before they could get to him.
I just have to think that just because you find it on the internet it is not all correct.
Sure if you eat a healthy diet low in lectins, low in trans fats or saturated fats high in vegetables and fruits high in omega threes and are still overweight then you a probably are not at risk but such a diet is not going to keep you overweight for long.
Maybe I have been self employed for way to many years and just don’t except excuses from my self
Their are do-gooders and do wonders.
Thankfully we we can all decide for ourselves which is which.
Matthew,
I also think your brother is extremely lucky to be alive. I hope he realizes that and that his lifestyle has certainly played a part in his recent condition. I hope he will do well.
I think there is a definite difference between "overweight" and "Obese". I really don't think the article was referring to obesity but I could be wrong.
I'm not there yet but I'd like to be a good bit thinner than I am and take my chances on needing extra padding later.

So sorry to hear about your brother, but I'm glad that he came through the surgery OK. I hope that some of your eating habits will rub off on him.
Shirley is quite correct, of course. If you read the article, you will see that the BMI 25-29.9 range seems to be where the best longevity occurs. At exactly 400 lbs, one would have to be 8 ft and 1 inch tall, in order to just meet the 29.9 BMI limit. Since your brother is probably not that tall, I hope that he will do what he needs to do, to get his weight down.
Love,
Tex
