first dinner out since starting diet
Tonight was my first dinner out since been diagnosed with MC and being on the gluten, diary, egg and what more free diet. There was not much choice but the food was very good and tasty, I had beef (I think steak), baked potatoes and broccoli. It is just great to experience the possibility of having this disease and be able to go out for dinner.
Harma that is great!
It is good to develop a list of "trained" or "tamed" restaurants that get to know what your intolerances are and that you trust. Also, you might have read Gabes suggestion of having cards printed with your intolerance to hand to the waiter. (It is still embarrassing when I run through what I can and cannot eat to a waiter and I see the eyebrows of others arching in disbelief and lack of patience)
Here's to enjoying life!.
love, Ant

I recently went to Portland, Oregon and I was absolutely amazed at how flexible the food industry was there for special diets. I normally travel with a list of grocery stores and search out hotels with at least a microwave and refrigerator and I didn't need any of that on this trip! Everywhere I went, people seemed to be aware of what was OK/not OK on their menu for special diets. We did have a good chuckle at one restaurant when we had one guy who didn't have a special diet. After the rest of us got through our modified orders (and the waiter didn't wince once!), he ordered "the tuna without the tuna." A couple of times, I was able to order something from the street "lunch carts". Admittedly, I went at off hours, but the lunch carts turned out to be great because I could look right through the ordering window to the "kitchen" and the cook would show me everything before putting it in the pan. Most of the other cities I've gone to, the lunch carts had pre-made stuff which I don't trust, but in Portland, a lot of the carts made each order fresh. I live in the Washington, DC area which is a more progressive than some places in the United States when it comes to special diets, but Portland's hospitality was way above and beyond what I've experienced here.
Kudos to Portland!

Congrats on enjoying a dinner out. hope all went well for the 24 hours after it.
and Ant thanks for the reminder i must put together the tweaked wording and set up those cards in a word doc.
i see the communication between waitress and chef/cook as the key risk to be managed.

It did not give me a flare up, but as long as I am on medication I don't expect to get one, although I did get some belly pain. Not dramatic, some cramping, no D. It could be they used some corn starch (I forgot to mention that). But also I had some troubles even before due to red cabbage out of the supermarket freezer. That was a bad idea and you know what is the most stupid, I knew it, because it was not the first time. Just sometimes I seem to forget these things. Fresh and home prepaid is fine, out of the supermarkt freezer with some ingredients added, wrong!!! And I used a bag of mixed fresh vegetables with taugeh, cabbage and lettuce and peppers. I got all the peppers out (at least the most), so maybe even a very little is not a good idea. Another possible thing I have been thinking about was the potatoes I ate in the restaurant. I have a problem with nightshades.
But the positive thing, I digest very well grapes and I like them.
But although the little troubles the last couple of days I am doing quite well. I worked a lot the last couple of weeks. The week before last week, both my colleagues were on holiday/family visit and it was just me running the office. I made days of minimum 9 and maximum 12 hrs. I was tired, I had it at certain times but my bowel problems did not get worse. Also I slept quite well (which has been a problem the last ten years).
