Helpful cafe in Kleinburg Ontario - got a gf lunch

Post by teagirl »

If anyone plans a trip to Kleinburg Ontario, perhaps to the McMichael gallery, there's a bakery cafe in town that can help with lunch.

I've had 50/50 results (maybe 75/25 against) eating out, and have had everything from being glutenated, through Rosie's experience of the 'stripped down' meal others are having, to a good meal cooked and presented with care.

As we were having an unseasonal warm and sunny day, we went to the gallery, and had a walk down main street. We'd researched gf places in the area, but found none so we expected to return home for lunch, but we saw a small cafe called the COOKIE CRUMBLE CAFE. We popped in and what did I see but some cookies marked gluten free! We spoke with the owner/cook and explained my problem, no gluten, no dairy, almost no raw veggies, limited cooked ones.

She knew about celiac disease, and although she's not advertised as a gf place, she was more than willing to make up a lunch for me. She went through every ingredient in every meal. I ended up with home cooked turkey with a salad of lettuce, shaved carrots, avocado, and a plain oil and balsamic dressing. Dessert was 2 different gf cookies and a tea. The SO had split pea soup, a prosciutto salad on ciabata (lucky dog) and a cappucino.

I am learning that it's worth it to ask - in a place not specificall gf, a willing, knowledgeable cook is worth his/her weight in gold especially if not fronted by a clueless wait person. Perhaps it's a size thing - small cafe, only 2 staff. I was so happy for the rest of the day. The cafe's (under construction) url is http://kleinburgcookiecrumblecafe.com

I've been enjoying the Aussie slang. I'm Canadian, moved from the north of the UK over 30 years ago. Here's a northern england word for you, for someone who is clueless/useless/no help whatsoever : gormless.

Maxine,

Thanks for the tip. You're right, of course, the cook is everything, when it comes to dealing with food intolerances.

In my little part of the world, speaking with the cook/chef is vital, because not only are the wait staff usually gormless, but they're sometimes dangerous, because they hate to admit that they're gormless.

Hi Maxine,

Sounds like a great lunch and it is always worth asking when eating out.

My DIL (Barrow-In-Furness, Cumbria) uses gormless all the time. Just love the British expressions. Great creativity.

Love, Maggie

Hi Maxine!

You hit the jackpot! What a lovely experience. Love the "gormless" - I had a friend who has lived in England and she called her dogs the "gorms" - is that the opposite of clueless???

Love,

Polly

As I understand it, "gaum" or "gorm" = "attention". People who do not pay attention are stupid. Waiters who do not pay attention are quite literally "gormless".
