World War II History Buffs/Need Help & Advice

Post by jodibelle352 »

Hi!
Something very interesting happened yesterday to my husband which left him in tears with so much emotion.
David's nephew delivered to him a card board box with instructions to give the box & contents to my husband with his older sisters death.
The contents of the box sent chills as well as a flooding of memories back to my husband. David (my husband) was only 3 yrs. old when his oldest brother; Robert went into the service and was killed by a snipers bullet at the age of 19yrs.
The U.S. flag with only 48 stars that draped his brothers casket when he was returned home was heart wrenching but also in this box was a book which we had NO IDEA it even existed.
The book is titled: BRITAIN'S HOMAGE TO 28,000 AMERICAN DEAD
at the bottom of the front cover reads: In Memory Of
Pfc. Robert James Everts, U.S. Army
My husband and I had no knowledge that an American Memorial Chapel was set up in St.Paul's Cathedral and that his brother; Bob is one of the 28,000 names inscribed in what Britain calls "The Roll of Honour". "The Roll of Honour lays facing west upon a marble pedestal under the eastern arch of the baldachino, which thus provides a setting for it and may therefore be considered an integral part of the chapel itself. The names of the American dead will in this way be recorded in the very heart of London on a spot more sanctified by its history and associations than any on which Britains's own dead are named."
I am hoping someone on our boards may know how my husband and I could possibly get a copy of the page from "The Roll of Honour" that has his brothers name inscribed. Our boards have members from all over the world and it's my hopes that someone may read this post and beable to help in our quest to gain a copy of the page with Pfc.Robert James Everts name.
There is this acknowledgement in the front of this book which I would like to share with you.
"A copy of this book is being presented to the next-of-kin of each of the 28,000 Americans whose sacrifice is therein commemorated. This has been made possible by The Times, Printing House Square, London, and the Dulverton Trust. Lord Dulverton, founder of the Trust, is a member of the Wills family, being the son of the late4 Sir Frederick Wills, Bt."
The knowledge we now have that David's brother's name is forever memorialized in such a distinctive manner in of all places St. Paul Cathedral is such an Honor which we would like to pass on to our family for the next generations.
Another item of interest is the following:
"A page at the beginning of the volume bears this tribute from General Eisenhower, in gold and black lettering:
Each name inscribed in this book is a story of personal tragedy and a drieving family; a story repeated endlessly in white crosses girdling the globe. The Americans, whose names here appear, were part of the price that free men have been forced a second time to pay in this century to defend human liberty and rights. Fittingly, this Roll of Honour has been enshrined by the Mother Country of all English-speaking democracies in this special Chapel of St. Paul's, once target of a barbaric attack. Here, we and all who shall hereafter live in freedom will be reminded that to these men and their comrades of all the Allies we owe a debt to be paid with grateful remembrance of their sacrifice and with the high resolve that the cause for which they died shall live eternally."
The Roll of Honour, for the time being is displayed in a glass case near the north transept of St. Paul's, close to the model of the reconstructed east end. A virger turns a page of the book each day. There is also a photostat duplicate of the book, bound like the original, which is for the purpose of enabling visitors to St. Paul's to verify the presence in the Roll of Honour of any particular name in which they are interested. A member of the cathedral staff is in attendance to find the page for them.
If you have any suggestions on how we would go about possibly getting further information in regards to "The Roll of Honour" and how one might possibly get a copy of the page that has David's brothers name inscribed we would truly be greatful. David was only 3 yrs. old when Bob was killed and next month David will be 69yrs. old so for 66yrs. this story of his brother has been untold until now.
Thank you so much for putting up with me. I hope I've given enough info and if you would like to ask me or David more questions just send a private message to me and we'll work on getting ahold of you to discuss your ideas.

Hi Jodi,

I looked around a bit, but I struck out. There is a site with that name, "Roll of Honour", but I was unable to locate any references to American casualties. The site does have searchable databases, but I can't locate any that refer to American soldiers, unfortunately.

http://www.roll-of-honour.com/

I get the impression that in order to get a copy of the page that you are interested in, one would have to know someone who resides in England, or someone visiting the country, and who would be willing to visit the St. Paul's Cathedral, to look up the page, (in the duplicate copy of the book, available for that purpose), and take a photo of it. One would think that there would be a database somewhere, that includes photocopies of the complete listings, but I have no idea where it could be found, or if it even exists, (since nothing of that sort turned up on the searches that I tried).

Maybe someone else here has better insight, or a better plan.

Love,
Tex

Thank You so much Tex for searching for us. I know my request is WAY out of the normal for the PP board but I'm hoping someone from England WILL read my post and possibly help me surprise my Dear David and give him a momento that would mean so much to him. Just call me an "Old Softy". LOL
It does state that the book was printed in Great Britain by The Times Publishing Company Limited so maybe I can try doing a search through this information.
Hope you are feeling much better and have had you at the top of my prayer list and will continue to do so. My friendship with you the past year and a half actually it will be 2 years in June has been a true and valued blessing for me.

Jodi
wow - what an amazing parcel,

I have done quite a bit of family history and research on my relatives that fought in WW1 and WW2

the honour board lists are obtainable via the family history websites...which i am a member..
i will look it up on the weekend

we are very lucky here in australia, they have made the personnel records of service people for WW1 publically available via our national archieves website. they are currently reviewing records for WW2 personnel and these will be available in the next 2 years (ALL FREE)

it was quite intense for me to see the records of my grandfather, he was on the frontline in france in WW1 and was a POW. on the file was a letter written by my great grandmother asking the whereabouts of her son she had not heard from him, that is when the authorities confirmed he was a POW.

I have been also been to the National Archieves in Kew London when i was on holiday there in 2009. I was researching my convict relatives. quite alot of their information is available 'online' and they have quite extensive records regarding WW2

as i find any links i will put them on a thread for you!!

to see her handwriting and 'plea' for information as her husband had recently passed.

Gabes Thank You So Much!

The past 24 hours have been soooooo emotional for my husband; David. When we found the Britain's Homage To 28,000 American Dead and that it was sent to only the next of kin of the soldiers killed there we were amazed as well as so honored to know that Robert James Everts, PFC in U.S. Army is forever remembered in The American Memorial Chapel in St. Paul's Cathedral and that his name is inscribed in a book displayed there called "The Roll of Honour".
It would mean so much to my husband; David to beable to see the page (if possible to copy) with his brother; Bob's name.
You have no idea how blessed we feel that you responded to my post and how grateful we are for any help you could give to us. The information we have already is something that our family can treasure always and pass onto generations.
Thank You once again for your love & support in this request that we thought would be impossible to do.

Jodi,
I found this website while searching. I had to register (free of charge) which enables you to search their site. /there is a section on the left that says "American Roll of Honour". After clicking there - it took me to a site where there is an interactive CD you can purchase and turn the pages of the book listing the names.

I hope this helps!

Love and hugs,
Mars

Mars:

Thank You! I'm truly getting a little closer to giving my Dear David an awesome birthday with your help as well as Gabes.
This may sound weird but as I checked out the price of the CD for Roll of Honour is the $16.95? LOL I know this may sound really silly but am not sure what the little L shaped symbol in front of price means and want to know before I order this.

I'm very much aware that my post is out of the normal for the PP boards but my husband; David has been so emotional after receiving this box of treasures that his sister; Ruth has had for years and with her passing it was her wish that these memories be given directly to David through her children. It's so amazing to learn all this information and receive such an awesome legacy in Memory of David's brother; Robert. It means alot that someone else feels that my quest is not just a silly whim.

Last night I was reading the book: Britain's Homage To 28,000 American Dead and you will not believe what I came across. On page 3 of this book there are 2 photographs. The second photo with the inscription at the bottom: The arrival of American troops at a Northern Irish port. Immediately, I grabbed the photo's we do have of Robert taken so many years ago and I could swear on a stack of Bibles that the soldier in the bottom right corner is David's brother; Robert. Right down to the Everts, nose, chin, eyebrows and dimples. The smiles are all the same. I am at least 95% positive that this is a photograph in the book of David's brother.

When browsing the site you sent me too. I was also able to find an e-mail address for the Virgers of St.Paul's Cathedral. I'm going to compose and e-mail and send it to see if there is anyway of possibly getting a photo copy of the page with David's brothers name enscribed. Don't know if they do that sort of thing but it's worth trying.

Gabes is also going to be doing some researching of her own this weekend to see if she can come up with more information about The Roll of Honour as well as The American Memorial Chapel at St. Paul's Cathedral.

I am so grateful for the help Tex, Gabes and yourself having given me. David's birthday is April 21st and I certain I'm going to beable to give to him something so very special that he will always treasure because of your help.

Love & God's Blessings:

Hi Jodi!

Could that little symbol be a "pound" sign? If so, there are $1.52 dollars in an English pound, so you would need to multiply the 16.95 by $1.52 to get the cost in U.S. dollars. Good luck!

Love,

Polly

Thank You Polly!

I wasn't sure how to figure out the currency difference and didn't want to order something today that I couldn't afford. With your help I now know I will have to order it the 3rd of April when our cash flow is better. LOL I will be ordering the The Roll of Honour CD for David for his birthday. It said shipment would take 24 hours so I'm hoping if I order then that it will be here by the 21st of April for David's birthday. Wish me Luck!

Hi all, I used to live in London, and I know they have a very good guide book so I checked to see if it was available online and it is.
Scroll down and you will see this beautiful memorial.
