Charlotte,

I am one who reacts to sorbitol, whether it's an additive, or in natural form in fruit. The tiny amount in many pills, (such as sublingual B-12), doesn't seem to bother me, but anything with a significant amount gives me D, (that's the only symptom, though - IOW, it doesn't trigger an MC reaction for me, it simply causes D). That's true for a lot of people, whether they have MC or not.

Be aware that there are more than a handful of people on this board who react specifically to the avenin in oats. Avenin is the oat equivalent of the gluten in wheat. IOW, we don't just react to oats that's cross-contaminated with wheat, we react to the oats themselves. Sometimes we have to eat it for a while before the intolerance matures enough to trigger a reaction, if we haven't eaten any oats in a long time. I had to eat it for 6 weeks, for example, before I began to react, and then it took another 6 weeks before the D completely went away. Of course, the biggest risk is from the fact that most commercial oats is cross-contaminated with wheat, during growing, harvest, handling, storage, and processing operations.

I believe that we are in the minority, so the odds are in your favor, just be aware of the possibility, and be careful about oats contaminated with wheat.

P. S. I have the same problem - I can't eat just a few nuts. LOL.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
